MBK Wines MBK’s principal aim is to celebrate wines that reflect a sense of place. MBK’s principle aim is to celebrate wines that reflect a sense of place.

With a philosophy of minimal intervention in the winemaking process, MBK wines believe in producing wines that highlight varietal characteristics and reflect their sub-regional origins

With riesling from Clare’s Watervale sub-region, and shiraz from the Barossa sub-region of Greenock Creek, sourcing quality fruit from esteemed locations is a priority for MBK.

Watervale, to us, felt like home. Surrounded on all sides by vines, rows and blocks extending as far as the eye can see; a panoramic view of vineyards.

Watervale is a subregion of the Clare Valley in South Australia. It is the ‘home’ of dry whites, namely Riesling. For MBK, choosing Watervale was a no-brainer.

The Clare Valley as a whole lies at higher altitudes than the Barossa Valley; the regional climate has more extreme variations, and acidity adjustments are not required as often.

Our Riesling is sourced from the highly regarded Grace vineyards in Watervale and is available to purchase now. Link in bio.

Intimidated by wine tastings?

The swirling of the glass, the swishing of wine in the mouth, palate, aroma, mouthfeel.

All these techniques and terminologies making the simple act of drinking ever complicated.

Here is MBK's first instalment in "Simple steps to looking like an expert":

Varietal. Region. Vintage.

– Familiarise yourself with typical examples of a wide-range of wines, although this is what experts do to train themselves, often they will have had years to do this. Plus, you get to drink a lot of wine.

– This will enable you to tell if a wine shows typical characteristics of its origin.

– When you encounter a similar wine, you'll know how to talk about it. You'll know how it compares to others of the same kind; good, bad, or different.

Stay tuned for the next instalment in MBK's simple steps to looking like a wine expert.

Fruit-selection is the formula to good wines.

MBK knows there's good fruit, and then there's good fruit.

Choosing the right fruit relies on our knowledge of great wines in the region. When choosing the right parcel of fruit, it requires a specialised eye.

We consult with winemakers who can hone down on the specific blocks and parcels of fruit to create our unique MBK expressions.

Our resident winemaker, Steven "Steve" Baraglia, who produces homemade wine, and is Head Winemaker at "Naked Run", has that eye for fruit; crafting many MBK releases.

With access to fruit and expert winemakers, MBK is able to offer wines that champion a sense of place, while retaining our iconic MBK house-style.

Region Spotlight: Greenock Creek

The origin of one of our flagship wines, the acclaimed Greenock Creek subregion is located along the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley.

Typically here you'll find the most powerful expressions of Barossa Valley Shiraz.

For our 2019 Greenock Creek Shiraz, we sourced fruit from '30s and '60s plantings off the Fabal vineyard in the northwest corner of the Barossa Valley.

The vines are grown on shallow, sandy red-brown loams with red clay alkaline subsoils.

Greenock Creek has two unique terroirs based on the vine's proximity to the creek. Vineyard areas close to the creek tend to have richer, deeper, clay-based soils, while sites on slopes and hills further from the creek are more rocky.

The vineyard sits at an elevation of approximately 300m and and as a result enjoys an extended ripening window compared to many other lower-lying sub- regions in the Barossa.

Rainfall is around 500-600mm per year, falling predominantly through winter and early spring.

Subsurface clay retains valuable moisture, sustaining the vines through the long, warm and dry summers and autumns.

These conditions keep disease at bay, enabling the growth of healthy bunches of compact and flavourful berries.

All this combines to a wine that is full-bodied, with opulent fruit and a crème de cassis-like flow. Deep red purple in the glass, satsuma plum, blackberry, black cherry, finely-spiced oak tones, liquorice and dark chocolate in aroma.

The attractively lifted nose leads to finely concentrated, textural characters woven together with the fine grip of natural tannins and acid.

Greenock Creek has a reputation for producing outstanding fruit with distinctly spiced/dark berry flavours and structure, that accentuates distinct varietal characteristics with its natural capacity to bestow regional character.

2018 saw a one and only production of Shiraz from the characterful Western Rim of the Barossa Valley.

Our vision was to experiment stylistically within the MBK quality ethos and create a more modern, mid-weighted style under the MBK moniker.

Repaying those who choose to cellaring it a little longer, the 2018 Western Rim Shiraz will see its best drinking window from now to 2028.

The 2018 Western Rim Shiraz presents an attractively bright lustre on a densely coloured background, with dark, small berries and finely spiced oak tones on the nose.

The supple palate shows a smooth, soft grip with beautifully balanced natural acid and fine, drying tannins that balance the ‘basket of berries’ driving the flavour profile.

This wine is a modern style Barossa Shiraz created to be enjoyed upon release and over the next 5-8 years.

We never craft wines that we wouldn't drink ourselves or share with you.

To this end, we source the best fruit from specific subregions to craft wines that are varietally-expressive and whose character reflects their subregional origins.

At each step of production, we work hand-in-hand with our winemakers to ensure that we produce wines that we are proud to share with you.

Here is Mario (middle-right) and Ben (left) of MBK with Max Schubert (middle-left) of Penfolds Grange Hermitage fame at Walkerville Cellars, the Barletta Boys former stomping grounds and, through their hard work, a premiere wine retail business.

We have over 40 years of experience in the wine industry, and over those years we’ve developed many relationships with incredibly talented and highly-lauded winemakers.

Utilising those relationships we’ve learned to painstakingly select the best parcels of fruit picked from vineyards chosen for their unique terroirs and the characteristics they impart to the wine.

Kim was born in Sydney to Norwegian parents. Dinners in the Falster household were supplemented with wine.

From a young age Kim and his siblings were ushered into the wonderful world of flavours that is wine through those watered down glasses.

He moved to South Australia in 1985 and fell in love immediately with everything the State had to offer, including the wine.

Kim steadily built up an extensive cellar and enjoys a range of quality wines, predominantly from the state he now calls home.

At any opportunity, Kim would develop wine fundraisers for the organisations he was involved in, marking his passion for wine through time.

Foreshadowing their eventual partnership, Kim sought Ben and Mario Barletta to supply the wine for these events.

Kim joined forces with the brothers over 10 years ago and together they have built customer relationships locally and have exported their product internationally.

The formation of MBK Wines has enabled Kim to expand his love of wine into a fun-loving business with Ben and Mario.

From the sub-regions of the Western Rim and Greenock Creek–located along the Barossa’s western ridge–come long-lived red wines of deep colour, abundant flavour and great structure.

Thin, sandy, red-yellow brown loam topsoils lie sparsely scattered over ancient deposits of bluestone, marble stone, limestone, quartz and shallower, shattered ironstone.

Rainfall can be moderate to moderately low, around 600mm per year but often less than 400 millimetres, falling predominantly through winter and early spring. Subsurface clay retains valuable moisture, sustaining the vines through the long, warm and dry summers and autumns.

Greenock Creek has two unique terroirs based on the vine's proximity to the creek.

Vineyard areas close to the creek tend to have richer, deeper, clay-based soils, while sites on slopes and hills further from the creek are more rocky.

The perfect, low disease pressure conditions in which to grow small, healthy bunches of compact, flavour-packed berries.

The result, wines that are full-bodied, rich and opulent in style, deep purple-red in colour, blue and black fruits, dark chocolate and iodine in aroma, round and velvety in shape and in texture, strong expressive tannins, strongly puckering and moderately drying.
