Quebec City
North America's only walled city is ironically welcoming to a variety of cultural backgrounds. Walls dating back centuries ago can be seen in the Haute-Village (Upper Town). This district, along with the quaint buildings and narrow streets of the Basse-Ville (Lower Town), both evoke a feeling of picturesque Old Europe. Place Royale, on the other hand, is the public square where Samuel de Champlain established the city (the country's second-oldest) in the 1600s. This square is adorned with handsome 17th- and 18th-century buildings.
