BHP South Australia Our SA operations consist of three mines - Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill and Carrapateena, that feed a central smelter and refinery at Olympic Dam.

We also have an exploration project at Ankata. We mine copper, gold, silver and uranium. Our South Australian operations consist of three primary mine assets, Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill and Carrapateena containing some of the world's most significant deposits of copper, gold and uranium.

10 years. 100+ kilometres. And we’re still going deeper👷⛏️

Last week, we celebrated a significant milestone at Carrapateena. On 30 September 2016, the first cut was made into the Tjati Decline, marking the start of a decade of development and growth.

The decline takes its name from the Pernatty gecko – known as ‘Tjati’ in Kokatha language and found in the Carrapateena area 🦎

And what a decade it’s been.

⛏️ First cut into the Tjati Decline – 2016
🟠 First copper-gold concentrate – 2019
⬇️ 1,000 metres below surface – 2022
💥 Sub-level cave reached surface – 2022
🚇 100 kilometres of lateral development – 2025
⛏️ Block Cave Extraction Level reached – 2026

The Tjati Decline is continuing towards Crusher 3, helping lay the groundwork for the first block cave drawbell in 2029 and the next chapter of Carrapateena.

A pretty big journey for one little gecko 🦎

Happy 10 years underground, Carra!

We know a thing or two about digging deep here in South Australia, but this time, we’re looking up 👀🌏

BHP is backing South Australian astronaut and Australian of the Year Katherine Bennell-Pegg, pledging support towards her mission to space.

Katherine is Australia’s first astronaut qualified under the Australian flag, and her mission could help inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, problem-solvers and big thinkers.

And that’s a mission we can get behind💫

Our support will also help take STEM beyond the launchpad, with education and outreach opportunities for school students, including in regional communities.

Because whether your future is underground, on the ground or 400km above it, big careers can start right here in South Australia🧡

Go Katherine! Next stop: space🚀⭐

Meet Ankata 👋🏼

Our Oak Dam exploration project has a new name: Ankata (pronounced AHN-guh-dha), meaning ‘bearded dragon’.

The name was chosen by the Kokatha people, the Traditional Owners of the area, through a community-led naming process, inspired by the many bearded dragons that call this part of Kokatha Country home🦎

Located around 65km south-east of Olympic Dam, Ankata is one of the most significant copper discoveries globally in recent years.

Our teams have been exploring there since 2018, and hope the next chapter will take us underground, with construction of a twin decline to help us learn more about the deposit and what its future could look like.

There’s still plenty of work ahead before any future development decisions are made, but today, we’re pretty excited to introduce Ankata🦎🧡

120 BHP legends and a whole lot of kilometres 🏅

A huge crew from across BHP SA hit the pavement for this year’s City to Bay, with 120 people pulling on their runners and getting involved! 👟

A big shoutout to our Wellness Committee for getting the team together and making it happen 💚

Whether you ran, walked, jogged or questioned your life choices somewhere along Anzac Highway… well done team! 😂👏

Big ropes. Bigger skips. One very deep shaft. 👀

Another huge milestone for the Prominent Hill Operations Expansion Project (PHOX), with the guide ropes, head ropes, tail ropes and skips now installed in the Wira Shaft.

And the numbers give you a pretty good idea of the scale of the job:

〰️ More than 20km of rope installed
⬇️ 8 guide ropes pulled up 1,370m through the shaft
🏗️ 4 head ropes paid out simultaneously
🤯 2 skip and bridle assemblies, weighing around 40 tonnes each, lowered approximately 1.3km underground

At maximum depth, the load being supported during the skip installation reached around 110 tonnes.

It was a seriously complex operation, brought together through plenty of planning, precision and teamwork across the PHOX Project, Prominent Hill Operations and our contracting partners.

One more big piece of Wira Shaft coming together👏

Meet Revati 👋 Mechanical engineer, project wrangler and professional site-hopper (for now)⚙️

As one of our graduates, Revati has already packed a fair bit into her BHP journey.

She started at the Olympic Dam smelter and refinery, worked underground at Olympic Dam, and has now made her way to Carrapateena, where she’s working with the Project Delivery team.

So, what does a day in projects actually look like?

Checking progress, chasing actions, talking to engineers, suppliers and contractors, keeping an eye on schedules and budgets, solving roadblocks, managing risks… and, in Revati’s words, “any and all of the above!” 😅

But her favourite part of the job? Being a graduate.

It’s given her the chance to jump between sites, teams and completely different parts of the business, from maintenance to projects, surface to underground, and figure out what she loves along the way.

And she’s only getting started 🚀
