A knock on the door. A moment of concern. And help when it was needed most.
Yesterday, one of our volunteers arrived to deliver a meal, but our customer didn’t answer the door.
For many people, this might seem like nothing more than a missed delivery.
But our volunteers know that sometimes, when something is out of the ordinary, it’s important to check.
The concern was raised, and our team quickly began a welfare check. We contacted the customer’s emergency contact, who went to the home to see if everything was okay.
When there was still no answer, they made the decision to enter the house, where they found the customer lying on the floor and unable to get up.
An ambulance was called immediately, and the customer was taken to hospital for urgent care.
Without our volunteer noticing that something wasn’t right, and our team following up, the customer may not have been found until the next scheduled meal delivery.
That’s why Meals on Wheels is about so much more than delivering a meal.
Every day, our volunteers provide nutritious food, a friendly face, social connection and, importantly, reassurance that someone is there to notice when something doesn’t seem right.
We’re incredibly proud of the care, compassion and vigilance our volunteers show every day.
Because sometimes, one knock on the door can make all the difference. ❤️
Great Food. Great People.
