Day 3 wrapped up an inspiring three days of connection, collaboration and conversation at the Meals on Wheels Australia Conference.

From powerful discussions on partnership and relational leadership to a thought-provoking keynote from Amy Gildea and a fitting conference close, today reminded us of the strength, purpose and impact behind the Meals on Wheels movement.

A big thank you to our speakers, delegates, volunteers and organisers who helped make this conference such a valuable experience.

Day 2 of the Meals on Wheels Australia National Conference was all about the future of care, connection and community 💙

From powerful discussions on the future of the Commonwealth Home Support Programme to inspiring keynote presentations on loneliness, volunteering and the neuroscience of human connection, delegates were reminded why Meals on Wheels is so much more than a meal.

Conference Chair Paul Sadler led a thought-provoking panel featuring Patricia Sparrow, Natalie Siegel-Brown and Professor Kathy Eager AM, exploring the future of aged care and the importance of ensuring older Australians continue to have choice, dignity and access to support that works for them.

Delegates also heard from keynote speaker Moira Were AM, who described Meals on Wheels as “empathy at scale” and volunteers as “social infrastructure, not a workforce.” Her message reinforced the incredible impact volunteers have in strengthening communities and reducing social isolation.

Foodbank Australia’s Sarah Davis highlighted the growing reality of food insecurity across Australia, while afternoon workshops tackled some of the sector’s biggest challenges and opportunities — from volunteering shortages and aged care reform to nutrition and innovation.

The day concluded with a powerful keynote from Dr Fiona Kerr, who explored the science behind human connection and the vital role Meals on Wheels volunteers play in supporting wellbeing, connection and care.

A special thank you to Diamond Sponsor and Dinner Sponsor, Agile Care for their valued support and a fun night of networking and delicious food at the National Wine Centre.

🍽️ Did you know?

Eating alone can have a significant impact on our health and wellbeing. Research shared today by Fiona Kerr at the Australian Meals on Wheels Conference highlighted that eating alone is linked to:

⚠️ Higher risk of malnutrition
⚠️ Lower metabolism and reduced physical activity
⚠️ Increased loneliness — with 1 in 5 people feeling most lonely when eating alone.

It’s a powerful reminder that meals are about so much more than food. They are about connection, conversation, and caring for one another.

Today’s session reinforced why what we do matters so much. 💙

What an incredible start to the 2026 Meals on Wheels Australia National Conference! 💙🍽️

Day one officially opened with a warm welcome from Conference Chair, Justina Gardiner, setting the tone for what promises to be an inspiring and meaningful gathering.

We were deeply honoured to begin on Country with a heartfelt Welcome to Country by Uncle Mickey O’Brien, acknowledging the rich history, culture and continuing connection of First Nations peoples to this land.

A special thank you also to Katrine Hildyard MP, Minister for Human Services, Minister for Seniors and Ageing Well, and Minister for Women, for delivering the official welcome address and recognising the vital role Meals on Wheels plays in supporting older Australians and strengthening communities across the nation. ✨

💛 National Volunteer Week 2026 💛

This National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the heart of Meals on Wheels SA - our volunteers.

The 2026 theme, “Your Year to Volunteer,” honours the incredible contributions volunteers make and invites Australians to make this year one of meaningful involvement, in ways that work for them.

We thank every volunteer who already gives their time, care and compassion. And if you’ve ever considered getting involved, maybe this is your year. Volunteering creates connection, purpose and lasting positive change - not just for those you support, but for you too.

💛 A heartfelt thank you to Travellers Aid Society in SA for their generous donation of $5,000 to Meals on Wheels SA.

This contribution helped support fuel reimbursements for our volunteer drivers throughout April, assisting the incredible people who travel countless kilometres each day to deliver nutritious meals, friendly visits, and connection to older South Australians.

Our volunteers are at the heart of what we do, and support like this helps ensure they can continue making a meaningful difference in communities across the state.

Thank you, Travellers Aid Society in SA, for supporting our volunteers and helping us continue delivering care beyond the meal. 🚗💛
