How great is it to see a mid-sized business that has already engaged their team in defining company values and creating a vision aligned to the business they’re actually in.

That’s leadership.

I see values in various states when I visit businesses:

1️⃣ They haven’t been considered at all.
2️⃣ They’ve been developed by the team, have meaning and potential — but no one knows how to embed them into day-to-day behaviour.
3️⃣ They belong to a larger organisation — beautifully printed, nicely framed… rarely discussed or lived.

When done properly, values create enormous opportunity.

During development:
• The team gets clear on what truly matters
• Healthy debate happens — what stays, what goes, and why
• Alignment strengthens

When embedded:
• They unite the team
• They create a common language
• They support reward, recognition, and performance conversations
• They guide decision-making

Because in reality — there will never be a procedure for every decision you need to make as a leader.

A clear, lived set of values becomes your filter.
Your compass.

In the UCM Leadership Toolbox, I call this tool “Your Leadership Compass” — highlighting the real value of values.

Not just posters.
Not just words.
But principles that shape behaviour and drive performance.

If you don’t have clear values — or you’re unsure how to make them live in your business — let’s start the conversation.

Safety is not a function.
It’s an outcome.

An outcome created by:
✔ Clear standards
✔ Frontline leadership
✔ Accountability
✔ Engagement
✔ Consistent reinforcement

Yet many businesses still treat safety like a separate activity instead of the result of how the business operates every day.

The best safety systems I’ve seen weren’t driven by paperwork.

They were driven by disciplined leaders who:

* spent time in the field
* reinforced expectations
* addressed issues early
* engaged their teams
* and never relaxed standards after 3 good days

High performance and safety are closely linked.

When operational discipline improves, safety usually follows.

I unpack this further in my latest blog:

“We’ve Got a Safety Problem…”

Most businesses don’t actually have a safety problem.

They have:

* A leadership problem
* A standards problem
* A communication problem
* An accountability problem
* A consistency problem

Safety is simply the outcome that eventually shows up.

Too often businesses chase the scoreboard:
TRIFR, incidents, audits, paperwork…

But ignore the inputs that create the result.

If your standards are inconsistent, leaders avoid tough conversations, instructions lack clarity, frontline supervision is weak, and expectations aren’t reinforced — eventually safety performance will reflect it.

Safety isn’t luck.
And it’s not just a department.

It’s the outcome of disciplined leadership and operational excellence.

I’ve unpacked this concept further in my latest blog:

At a recent coaching event, an experienced coach — shared a simple 3-step process for introducing people to a new role or new team.

It was in a sporting context… but it translates perfectly to the workplace.

The model:
1️⃣ Understand your role
2️⃣ Agree to your role
3️⃣ Play your role

Simple. Powerful. Effective.

Too often, we try to make onboarding feel super relaxed and informal — which is great for comfort, but it can often lack structure and create ambiguity.

And ambiguity is the enemy of performance.

When people aren’t clear on what’s expected:
• They hesitate
• They second guess
• They miss the mark

Clarity, on the other hand, builds confidence.

When a new team member understands their role, agrees to it, and knows what success looks like — they can get to work faster and contribute sooner.

This is a key part of effective onboarding and something I strongly encourage leaders to explore.

In the UCM Leadership Toolbox, this principle sits right at the start.

Because before performance… comes clarity.

One thing I’ve noticed about most outstanding leaders—they’re hungry for growth.

They’re open to new ideas, curious about fresh concepts, and eager to learn from what the most effective leaders are doing. Growth isn’t a “nice to have” for them—it’s the fuel that keeps them moving forward.

Yes, it makes great sense for businesses to invest in leadership development. But for me: if you want to make it in leadership, you can’t wait for others to create opportunities for you.

✅ The best leaders take responsibility for their own growth.
✅ They seek out learning, even when it’s uncomfortable.
✅ They create momentum by investing in themselves—because they know their growth shapes their team’s success.

Leadership is a privilege. Don’t sit back waiting for the chance to grow—go after it.

This ANZAC Day, we pause and remember the courage and sacrifice of our forebears—those who marched into the unknown so that we might live in the free, beautiful nation we call Australia. Lest we forget the mateship, endurance and self‑lessness they showed on distant battlefields.

Today, let’s honour their legacy not just with moments of silence, but by embracing all we have: our families, our freedoms and our communities. We are incredibly fortunate to call this sunburnt country home.

As we gather with loved ones or stand at dawn services, let’s focus on gratitude—cherishing what we have rather than longing for what we don’t. In doing so, we keep the spirit of the ANZAC alive in our hearts and our actions..

Lest we forget. 🌅🇦🇺

Walking Past Behaviour Is Still a Leadership Decision

Every time a leader ignores substandard behaviour, a decision is made.

Not consciously — but clearly.

The decision says:
“This is acceptable.”

Leadership isn’t about confrontation.
It’s about consistency.

If you want standards to matter, conversations must happen.

Here’s how to do it properly , link in the comments.

There’s real value in open discussion and healthy debate within a team.

As a leader, you want people to challenge ideas, ask questions, and put forward different viewpoints — that’s how you get better decisions, not average ones.

But here’s what’s important.

Once the discussion is done and a decision is made, everyone must get on board.

Not half in. Not quietly disagreeing on the sidelines. Not waiting for it to fail so you can say “I told you so.”

Fully committed.

This is where I see teams come unstuck.

They’re good at the disagree part — plenty of opinions, plenty of input.
But they struggle with the commit part — alignment, ownership, and ex*****on.

The principle is simple:
• Have your say — respectfully and constructively
• Accept the outcome — even if it’s not your preferred option
• Commit to making it work — like it was your idea

Because once a decision is made, success depends on everyone pulling in the same direction.

High-performing teams don’t always agree…
But they always commit.

Last month I had the opportunity to work with a business stepping into a new chapter of an already proud history.

We worked together to map out a roadmap to high performance, focusing on the inputs that truly matter.

Because great businesses don’t leave customer experience to chance.
They design it.

To create an environment where customers are excited to return, you need a team that is committed to the cause.

Our focus wasn’t just on creating an amazing customer experience.
It was on growing the team to deliver it.

We ran a leadership development session focused on the UCM formula that drives high performance, spending time designing the right inputs to consistently deliver outcomes that match our goals.

It was exciting to see the leaders embrace the growth — and genuinely pumped to get back to their stores and start implementing the strategies.

The goal is simple — every customer leaves:

• With their problem solved
• Confident in the product
• Impressed by the service
• Happy with the value
• And feeling great about the experience

Now the blueprint is in place.

And I’m excited to see how it translates into serious growth — for both the team and the business.
