A valuable few days for learning, discussion and connection for Sally Storey - Partner, Shannon Sims - Principal, and Managers Peter Orr and Courtney Duffy, who represented Brentnalls SA at The Tax Institute Barossa Convention last week.

The multi-day event brought together accounting, law, financial services and regulatory professionals from across the country to explore current technical tax issues, share insights and connect with peers across the industry.

The program covered key issues shaping the current tax landscape, including:
✏️ State taxes
✏️ Division 296 (superannuation)
✏️ Property development
✏️ Family Trust Distributions Tax
✏️ Recent federal budget announcements

Sally summed up the value of the event well; “At a time of huge change and uncertainty in the tax system, there is nothing better than two days of discussion and debate amongst the country’s top tax professionals.”

Thank you to The Tax Institute for hosting such an engaging and relevant event.

From this financial year, the greater emphasis will be placed on whether a property is held mainly to generate rental income. Ongoing costs such as loan interest, insurance, repairs and depreciation may no longer be deductible.

In our latest article, we explain what’s changing, which expenses may be affected, and what holiday homeowners should review now.

Identity verification is becoming a more prominent part of doing business in Australia.

With accounting, conveyancing, legal, real estate, trust and company service providers now captured under Australia’s expanded AML/CTF framework, more businesses and professional advisers are likely to see additional verification steps become part of certain engagements.

For accounting firms, the focus is on making these checks clear, secure and as efficient as possible while meeting new compliance obligations.
