🍎 What type of educator are you? 🍎

An X (formerly Twitter) chat in 2019 asked some two questions:
“What type of educator did you need as a student?”
and
“How has that shaped you into the educator that you are today?”

The responses produced some common values such as; to be seen, valued, pushed, protected, coached, celebrated, empowered, and unconditionally loved. 🥰

From this conversation, five ‘types’ of educators became clear: Gate-keeper, Advocate, Empowerer, Passionate Educator, Houdini.

I resonated with several of these - Advocate is who I aspire to be, and Houdini is who I naturally am. This makes sense, because each child enters our services with different needs - and our ability to be flexible and adaptive is important.

🤔 Are you the educator you needed as a child?

💬 So, ‘COMMENT’ which one (or mix) are you, or do you aspire to be?

🎤 You don’t need to be Beyoncé!🎤

From one tone-deaf educator to another: sing to them!

Sing your little heart out.
Sing songs all day long.

Before I became an early childhood educator, it would scare the daylights out of me to sing in front of anyone other than my bathroom mirror! But since becoming an educator (and a parent), it has proven one of the most important tools...

🎵 It supports language development: it helps children develop the muscles needed for talking. It promotes tone, repetition, rhythm and pronunciation.

🎵 It builds social skills: children who sing together recognise a group contribution to the sounds produced, and it helps build a sense of belonging.

🎵 They can express emotions: singing can require children to use their whole bodies to express themselves, they can also feel more confidence and in control of their emotions.

Singing songs can also release those feel-good hormones - which is double-as-good for you and your children! 🤩

👉 It’s okay to feel self-conscious when you start. My advice is, ‘fake it ‘til you make it!’...once you start, you’ll realise the children don’t care what your voice sounds like.

🌱 THE FIRST STEP TO EDUCATOR GROWTH & SUCCESS 🌱

Do you want to improve your leadership skills?
…Facilitate more engaging group times?
…Create fun learning provocations?
AMAZING!! 🤩

The first step is to have a POSITIVE MINDSET. 🧘

🤷 What does it look like?

It’s more than surface-level ‘happiness’ and ‘cheeriness’; it’s a deep-seated belief in your abilities and the power to push through challenges.

It encourages creativity, productivity, and solution-focused problem-solving. 💪

💬 Just last week I was having a chat with an educator, and they were telling me about some challenges within their learning space. While they were talking through their challenges, they were identifying solutions without even noticing. They finished by saying, “I’m sorry for venting!” ...and I pointed out that they were actually reflecting and problem-solving as they were talking. They left the conversation with actionable steps because they were already in a positive mindset; ready to tackle the challenge. 🙌

Growth can be a tricky feeling 🙈 that sometimes brings up negative thoughts, designed by your brain’s limbic system to keep you feeling ‘safe’ in your ‘comfort zone’. When you have these feelings, it’s important to look inwards and acknowledge where these thoughts are coming from – are they real (ie. Will I get hurt/injured/fired, will someone else get hurt/injured/fired) or just perceived threats (ie. Everyone will think I’m silly/stupid, it won’t work and I’ll be embarrassed).

👉 Here are some ways you can begin building a positive mindset:

✨Positive affirmations
✨Practicing gratitude
✨Embracing failure as a learning opportunity
✨Adopting consistent ‘success’ habits
✨Surround yourself with positive people

💬 ‘COMMENT’ and tell me what steps you are taking to build a positive mindset?

PUT DOWN THE DARN iPAD! 🤪📱👇

In a world flooded by technology, we’re missing the little moments of magic ✨

I encourage & URGE you to focus on what you can see through your own lenses, rather than the camera. 📷

Less iPad time = more interactions
More interactions = better relationships
