SCALE OR STAY SMALL…???
It’s an important question I urge all small business owners to consider.
Sometimes staying small sets you free faster… if you’ve got the right plan in place!
A few days ago after a long hike in the mountains of Serbia I stumbled across this beautiful little small business on the side of the road.
A local village shop full of hand made goodies from healing potions and preserves to many flavours of Serbia’s traditional drink rakia. It made me think of that famous fable about the Mexican fisher man and the American MBA Executive…
THE STORY…
An American investment banker is vacationing in a small coastal Mexican village when he notices a fisherman with a small boat coming to shore with a few large, high-quality fish.
Impressed, the banker asks the fisherman how long it took him to catch them. The fisherman replies that it only took a little while.
The banker, seeing a business opportunity, suggests that the fisherman should spend more time fishing. "If you do," he explains, "you could catch more fish and buy a bigger boat.
Then, with a bigger boat, you could go farther out to sea and catch even more fish. Soon, you could buy a fleet of boats. You could then bypass the middleman and sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing, and distribution.
Eventually, you could move to Mexico City, then Los Angeles, and finally New York City, where you could run your expanding company."
The fisherman, intrigued, asks,
"And then what?"
The banker smiles and says, "That's the best part! You could make millions and millions of dollars and become very rich. You could then retire, move to a small coastal village, and spend your days sleeping late, fishing a little, playing with your children, taking a siesta with your wife, and enjoying your evenings with friends and family."
The fisherman looks at the banker, smiles, and says,
"But that's what I'm doing now."

Sometimes in business we catch ourselves chasing our tails… running in circles…
Building our empire… and trying to get to a place we could reach much faster with much less stress if we just stayed small.
When was the last time you stopped and asked yourself… where is this all going?
WHAT IS THE END GOAL?
Thinking about that and building a freedom plan over a business plan is a big paradigm shift… but one that could truly set you free. What are your thoughts?
