BULLIES ON NOTICE
I will never understand the need to bully another person in the workplace.
But I am encouraged to see increasing recognition that psychological safety at work matters, and that workplace bullying, unreasonable behaviour and psychosocial hazards can have very real consequences.
To those experiencing bullying: please know that there is increasing awareness, support and accountability. Speak to someone. Document what is happening. Seek help. You should not have to sacrifice your mental health simply to earn a living.
To the bystanders: please think about speaking up. Sometimes the person being targeted is already exhausted, isolated or questioning themselves. A colleague saying “I saw that, and it wasn't okay” can matter enormously. Silence can unintentionally allow poor behaviour to continue.
And to those who bully: stop.
Leadership does not require intimidation. Confidence does not require diminishing somebody else. Another person's competence, ideas, experience or success are not a threat to yours.
We are all equal human beings trying to make our way through life.
Have the difficult conversation. Address performance issues. Disagree. Challenge ideas. Give honest feedback. Manage people properly.
But do it respectfully.
No job, title, target or workplace disagreement justifies destroying another person's confidence, health or livelihood.
We can do better than that.
