Cathy Freeman is undoubtedly one of Australia’s most celebrated & inspirational athletes, winning her gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She is a proud Kuku Yalanji and Birri Gubba Aboriginal woman.

Although Nova Peris, part of the Women’s Hockey team, was the first Aboriginal Australian to win an Olympic gold medal in 1996, Cathy is the First Aboriginal Australian to win an Olympic gold medal. One week prior, Cathy lit the Cauldron at the incredible Opening Ceremony, another first.

Argyle took time this morning to discuss Cathy’s story, her compelling , and how she proudly wrapped herself in the Aboriginal flag after winning her gold. At the time, our team of course were all different age ranges with differing knowledge of Aboriginal history and culture. We came together to pay respect for her various challenges, victories, and the changes she has made since this time - for both Aboriginal peoples and for women.

Cathy founded the Cathy Freeman Foundation in 2007, now known as Murrup, an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO), which is the Wurundjeri word for 'spirit.’

As we reflect on Cathy’s monumental achievement, we acknowledge her words, 'Somewhere deep inside, I'd absorbed all the pain and suffering my people had endured and turned it into a source of strength.'

It is always inspiring to see so many community members coming together to support Reconciliation SA and this year's Fundraiser Gala was no exception!

Thank you to all our friends who joined us for the night and to everyone involved in making this a night to remember.
