🔙 Today, marking 15 years since this memorable moment with Lionel and Pep chatting in the Bernabéu locker room, after thrashing Real Madrid 6-2 at the Bernabéu, it's worth recalling Leo and Xavi Hernández's explanation of the birth of the famous 'false 9'.
So begins the conversation in the documentary "Take the Ball, Pass the Ball". 🍿
🗣️ Messi: "Pep called me the day before the clasico and made me come to the training ground to tell me that we were going to change positions. He had been watching games with Tito Vilanova and they had decided to do something new. It was also new for Real Madrid. They had studied us a lot and at that moment they didn't know whether to come out or not. Freedom when I dropped back and when the center backs came out, Samuel and Henry 'ran' into space and that's how the first goal from Henry came."
🗣️ Xavi: "Guardiola changed the system and told Henry and Eto'o to play between the fullback and center back. Analyzing the movements of Real Madrid's center backs, Pep realized that they never came out to pressure the number nine of any team. We achieved numerical superiority with the false '9', with Messi coming to join in the midfield. We always had one more to keep possession and we had numerical superiority throughout the game."
An hour and a half before kickoff, Guardiola gathered Messi, Iniesta, and Xavi to give them one last instruction:
"You three against Lass (Diarra) and (Fernando) Gago. I know you can do it. If you execute the three against two well, we will have won the match."
The plan couldn't have worked better... 🥃😮💨
