The Migration (Arrival Control) Determination 2026 (LIN 26/040) commenced on 26 March 2026 and will remain in force for 6 months. Under this determination, certain ๐—ผ๐—ณ๐—ณ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฉ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ (๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ) ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฎ ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—น๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—œ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜ will have their visa temporarily cease to be in effect, unless an exemption applies.

This measure applies where the person:

โ€ข holds a Visitor (subclass 600) visa, and
โ€ข is recorded by the Department as having used a passport issued by the Islamic Republic of Iran when applying for that visa.

Importantly, this does not affect all Iranian temporary visa holders. At this stage, it applies only to the specific group described above. It also does not apply to Iranian Visitor visa holders who were already in Australia when the determination commenced.

The determination does not apply to the following Visitor visa holders with Iranian passports:

โ€ข the spouse, de facto partner, or dependent child of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent visa holder, or an Australian resident who is not subject to a time limitation (such as a New Zealand citizen)
โ€ข the parent of a child under 18 who is in Australia
โ€ข a person who was in Australia when the determination commenced
โ€ข a person who holds a Permitted Travel Certificate (PTC) that is in force.

The Department has also stated that affected travellers may request a ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—น ๐—–๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ through its secure online portal, and that requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis in limited circumstances.

Previously, sponsors and applicants were able to lodge the Sponsorship, Nomination and Visa applications at the same time, which allowed the visa applicant to obtain a Bridging Visa while the application was being processed.

These changes took effect on 11 March 2026 and apply to all Subclass 407 visa applications lodged on or after that date.

This change will significantly affect application strategy, timing, and may create practical difficulties for applicants who are relying on a Bridging Visa to remain lawful in Australia.

Weโ€™ve had a very positive week here, with three Subclass 482 visa grants received over the last few days. These clients had been waiting 6โ€“7 months, so we are incredibly pleased to finally see these approvals come through. Congratulations to each of them, and thank you sincerely for your patience throughout this long process.

Unfortunately, these delays are becoming increasingly common. The 482 visa used to be processed in 1โ€“2 weeks, but many applications are now taking over 7 months. This is understandably frustrating for both applicants and employers, especially at a time when businesses across Australia are facing significant skills shortages and urgently need staff in place.

Another challenge is that the Department now processes nominations first and only finalises the visa application 2โ€“4 weeks later, which has added further delays to the overall timeline.

There is one piece of good news for sponsorship transfer applicants (existing 482 visa holders changing employers). If your new employer lodges a nomination within 180 days of you ceasing employment with your previous sponsor, you are allowed to continue working with your new employer while the application is being processed. The Department recognises the delays and has adopted this approach to reduce disruption for both workers and businesses.

Additionally, for those planning to apply for 186 Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) in the future, the two-year employment requirement is counted from the date the nomination is lodged (provided the nomination is eventually approved), rather than from the approval date.

Despite the frustrations, today we want to celebrate the clients who finally received their visas after such a long wait. We are proud to have supported them through the process and are grateful for the trust they placed in us.

Employer sponsored visas continue to make up a large part of our caseload, and we genuinely enjoy working closely with both employers and skilled migrants. Over the years, we have been honoured to assist not only small businesses, but also many large and reputable companies across South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.

Thank you to all the employers and applicants who choose to work with us. We truly appreciate the opportunity and look forward to continuing to support you with your staffing needs and visa pathways.

If your business is considering sponsorship, or if you are a skilled worker exploring employer sponsored visa options, feel free to reach out โ€” we are here to help.

The 2025โ€“26 Skilled Migration State Nomination Allocations have now been released, with a total of 20,350 places across the 190 and 491 visa programs.

Here is the full breakdown for each state and territory:

๐Ÿ”น ACT: 800 (190) + 800 (491)
๐Ÿ”น NSW: 2,100 (190) + 1,500 (491)
๐Ÿ”น NT: 850 (190) + 800 (491)
๐Ÿ”น QLD: 1,850 (190) + 750 (491)
๐Ÿ”น SA: 1,350 (190) + 900 (491)
๐Ÿ”น TAS: 1,200 (190) + 650 (491)
๐Ÿ”น VIC: 2,700 (190) + 700 (491)
๐Ÿ”น WA: 2,000 (190) + 1,400 (491)

In comparison, the 2024โ€“2025 program year had a significantly higher allocation, with 26,260 nomination places in total. This reflects the governmentโ€™s increasing preference for employer-sponsored visa pathways.

Western Australia is clearly the big winner this program year, receiving a generous 3,400 nomination places, while South Australia has been allocated 2,250 places. As a result, SA nominations are likely to remain highly competitive throughout the year.

The recent 189 invitation round outcome has been released:
https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/working-in-australia/skillselect/invitation-rounds

The SA Government has provided the following update on their website:

The Commonwealth Government have provided South Australia with a small interim allocation for the 2025-26 program year.

Given the small number of interim allocations, Skilled and Business Migration (SBM) will not open for new Registration of Interest (ROI) applications and instead focus on inviting strong applicants contributing to the stateโ€™s workforce requirements, including from the ROIโ€™s submitted in the 24-25 program year.

Once the Commonwealth Government provides South Australia with its full allocation, SBM will release its full policy settings for the upcoming program year.

South Australiaโ€™s two Designated Area Migration Agreements (DAMAs) have been extended until 30 June 2026.

The current DAMA occupations are retained and can be accessed on the Move to South Australia website.

South Australia has also retained the age concession of up to 55 years, a 10% reduction to the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT), as well as English and work experience concessions.

The pathway to permanent residency for clients holding the Skills in Demand (SID) 482 visa has been reduced to two years. These clients can now apply for the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) 186 visa after holding the 482 visa for a period of two years.

The South Australian Government plans to negotiate a new five-year statewide DAMA with the Commonwealth Government in 2025โ€“26.

Time flies! The 2025 financial year has ended and now the 2026 FY has started.

Looking back, employer sponsored visas (482/186/494/400/DAMA) absolutely dominated our caseload, due to the recent shift of migration directions and policies. This is like over 10 years ago when everyone was trying to apply for the 457 visa and the 187 RSMS visa.

Skilled migration visas (189/190/491) have been very challenging though. All the state nominations we received were mostly for health professionals (dentist, nurse, pharmacist) or people working in the outer regional areas. Some applicants had to wait for a couple of years to get an invitation, while others are still waiting.

Unfortunately the situation may remain the same in the 2026 FY. Finding an employer for sponsorship may be the key to getting your permanent residency. Speaking of 2026, it will mark my ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐˜๐—ต ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜† as a migration agent. Time does fly!
