The Wignall family have decided that age, health, family and 46 years in the industry is a great innings, and like all good things some issues in life lead to older age and retirement plans.
For our regular readers it is common knowledge that the second generation winemaker, Rob Wignall, has been working through a blood cancer journey since 2019. The good news about this journey is the battle fields have been drawn and with any luck will be beaten!
Rob and Claire Wignall has been analysing our future and it has been called that 2025 will be the year of retirement from the wine industry for Wignalls. The winery will not be sold but the label to be retired as being a family name and having legacy, it would not be right for a business to take over this legacy of two generations under the original family name.
The great news is that the cellar door, winery and vineyards have been let out to two families with the same vision as the Wignall Family. Fervor Wines has taken lease of all the vineyards growing Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and the majority of this fruit will go under the Fervor label, also incorporating the ”Albany” GI sub region on the front labels starting from the 2025 vintage.
Paul Nelson Wines will be taking over the winery and Cellar Door operations in the near future once liquor licensing transfers takes place. The next generation of winemakers have great plans for the property, and the cellar door will under go a transformation into their cellar door and on weekends a small wine bar with live music over the Summer months and possibly large concerts as well in the future. This is an exciting development for Albany and much needed premium wine experience for our visitors alike – aiming to open in October 2025.
The perfect opportunity to “Thank You” for all the years with your patronage and friendship, there are many people that have been enjoying Wignalls for many decades and now you can still enjoy the fruits of our labour under the labels represented above.
We will miss you, but hope you will visit the winery in the future and keep enjoying Albany produce as much as in the past
All the best and hopefully we will meet again in the future
Kindest regards and signing off for Wignalls
