If a relative asks you to be the executor of their will, should you accept?

What can go wrong?

When disputes arise, executors are the ones left to clean up the mess, often navigating difficult family dynamics.

On top of this, saying yes to being an executor can make you personally liable for someone else's debts.

An executor's job isn't always straightforward, and things can go wrong.

"The deceased's wishes … can be very vague, and we do see that a lot of wills don't contain much of the deceased's wishes," says Donal Griffin, the director of Sydney law firm Legacy Law.

Mr Griffin explains that the deceased's wishes are generally open to interpretation and can result in tense conversations that don't always go smoothly.

"We see families break up, essentially. Limbs of the family don't talk to other limbs of the family because there's a perception that somebody's done the wrong thing," Mr Griffin explains.

Probably the most frequently asked question at our Funeral Home…

This can sometimes be confusing, as there are two different documents that families may hear referred to as a “Death Certificate”.

Medical Certificate of Cause of Death - The Medical Certificate of Cause of Death is completed by the doctor responsible for certifying the death. It records the medical cause of death and is provided to the Funeral Director as part of the required documentation following a death.

This is not the official Death Certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Official Death Certificate - The official Death Certificate is issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages Western Australia once the death has been registered.

Gift of Grace Funerals will register the death on your behalf, using the information provided and approved by your family.

Once registered, the official Death Certificate is issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages and usually arrives at our office within approximately 7–10 working days. We can then arrange for you to collect it from our office or have it sent to you by priority post.

It’s just one of the many things we take care of for our families during a time when there is already so much to think about.

A little while ago, I received an online order for one community heart. I always wonder about these orders...why just one? This time, I got the most beautiful answer...

When I choose hearts, I do it by instinct and don't allow myself to be bossed about by the natural second guessing that my brain does. On this occasion, I chose a pink heart and as always, my brain questioned me about it and I overrode it. Soon afterwards, the recipient emailed me to say that her Mum had passed away and she misses her terribly. When she ordered the heart, she asked her Mum to please send her a pink heart to let her know she was watching over her daughter. When the pink heart arrived, it provided confirmation that her Mum is protecting and loving her still 🩷

Sometimes, the heart just knows.
