A great evening in Mount Barker last Thursday for our AI Edge workshop. 🤖

We had a really engaged group of local businesses, plenty of questions and, most importantly, we got stuck into actually using AI for things that can help with the day-to-day running of a business.

One of the examples started with something most businesses will have to deal with at some point... a customer complaint email. 😬

From that one email, we used AI to help create:

📧 A professional response to the customer
📋 A staff process to help prevent the issue happening again
📱 A social media post
💻 Website content
✍️ A blog
💡 And more

That's where AI can be really useful. It's not just about asking it to write another Facebook post. Used properly, it can save time, help with processes, improve communication and turn one piece of information into a whole lot more.

You don’t have to go all-in. You just have to get started.

Starting a business can feel like a pretty big decision.

Do I quit my job? Do I need a heap of money behind me? What if it doesn’t work? Where do I even start?

But starting a business doesn’t have to mean throwing everything you’ve got at it from day one.

You can start small.

Maybe it’s one day a week. A few hours after work. Selling at a local market. Taking on your first couple of customers. Or simply sitting down and working out whether that idea you’ve had for the last six months actually stacks up.

Keep the day job if you need to. Test the idea. Work out your costs. Find out what people will pay. Learn what works and, just as importantly, what doesn’t.

Then make the next decision.

Because there’s a big difference between taking a risk and taking a calculated risk.

You don’t need to know today whether your idea will become your full-time business.

You just need to decide whether it’s worth taking that first step.

What could your idea become?

Maybe you’ve got an idea you keep coming back to.

Something you’re good at that people might actually pay you for. A hobby that could make you a bit of extra money. Or maybe you’ve just been thinking for a while that you’d quite like to work for yourself.

You don’t have to quit your job tomorrow, borrow a heap of money or have everything figured out before you start.

You can start small.

Have a look at whether people would actually pay for what you’re offering. Work out what it would cost. What would you need to charge? Who else is doing it? Could you start it on the side while you keep the security of your regular income?

And if it doesn’t work? You’ve learnt something without betting the house on it.

If it does work, then maybe you give it a bit more time and see where it goes.

That hobby might make you some extra money. That idea might turn into a side business. And eventually, that side business might become your main business.

You don’t need to know where it’s going to end up before you start.

You just need to find out whether there’s something there.

Is it the business that isn’t working, or is it how you’re trying to fit it into your life?

We see this quite a bit with people who have started a business while still working another job.

The business is growing. Customers are coming in. There’s potential there.

But you’re working during the day, running the business at night, catching up on weekends and eventually wondering, “Is this actually worth it?”

Before you decide the business isn’t working, maybe look at how you’re working.

Could you cut your day job back by one day a week and make that a proper business day?

Not an evening when you’re already knackered. Not a Sunday afternoon squeezed between everything else. One full day where the business gets your attention.

It gives you a chance to see what the business could actually become, without immediately giving up the security of your regular income.

And while we’re at it, we’ll even defend the tax man slightly! 😬

Paying more tax is generally a good problem to have because it means you’re making more money. We’d rather see a business earning the income and paying the tax than not earning the income in the first place.

Also, don’t forget what the business is giving you beyond the dollars. You’re keeping your skills current, learning, building something of your own and doing something your customers obviously value.

So maybe the question isn’t “Is it worth it?”

Maybe it’s “Does the way I’m doing it at the moment still work for me?”

Sometimes you don’t need to give up on the business.

You just need to give it a bit more room to grow.
