Matthew Lilly of HHG Legal Group has more than 25 years' experience advising businesses on commercial law, employment matters, governance, contracts and risk management.

Having recently made the Great Southern home, he works with businesses of all sizes to help them navigate legal issues before they become expensive problems.

🎤 Booking a performer? Check your super obligations.

Hiring a musician, entertainer or sportsperson could mean you need to pay their super, even if they have an ABN and send you an invoice.

Here’s what you need to know:

• An ABN does not automatically mean “no super”. Eligible sole traders and contractors can still be entitled to it.

• It can cover work behind the scenes, including certain services connected with performances, films and broadcasts.

• Business structure matters. Hiring a company, partnership or trust generally has different obligations from hiring an individual.

• Super must go into their super fund. Giving them extra cash to organise it themselves does not meet your obligation.

• Payday Super started on 1 July 2026. Where required, super is paid with each payment and must generally reach their fund within 7 business days.

Tax is a separate check. Contractors generally manage their own income tax, but special withholding rules apply to some performers.

Check the arrangement before agreeing on the fee. Nobody enjoys an unexpected encore from their accountant!

Bella & Wattle is a small, local floral business, using dried WA grown Aussie natives in an array of different floral arrangements, such as thrifted vases and mugs to create longer lasting, sustainable pieces.
