Workplace wellbeing isn't a nice-to-have anymore. It's good business.

This week, our HR Business Partner Lucie Wallis was in Sydney with senior leaders at Warner Bros., running a Wraw (Workplace Resilience and Wellbeing) workshop - and the conversation was a great reminder of why this work matters.

When your people are resilient, they handle change better, stay engaged, and keep performing even when things get hard. And when your people thrive, your business does too.

The Wraw Index helps organisations measure exactly that. It's a world-first tool that looks at how resilience affects wellbeing, performance and engagement and gives leaders real, practical data to act on. Through individual, team and leadership reports, you get a clear picture of where your people are at and what you can do about it.

We're proud to be one of the first Australian businesses accredited in Wraw and the only Master Practitioner in the country.

Congratulations, Lucie. Helping leaders build healthier, more resilient workplaces is exactly what we're here for. 👏

What's one thing your organisation does to support resilience at work? We'd love to hear.

Earlier in the week, we hosted our first ‘Lunch & Learn’ session, exploring the topic of AI in people management.

Presented by Linda Griffiths-Brown, the session highlighted the growing relevance of AI for businesses of all sizes and explored how it can be used practically within HR and workplace settings.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed insights and questions throughout the session. It was fantastic to see local businesses and professionals taking such a proactive interest in understanding how AI can be used appropriately, safely and effectively.

Our latest blog post talks about some of the issues we covered: https://www.totalhrm.com.au/r/32y

👉We’ll be continuing our ‘Lunch & Learn’ series every two months — offering a one-hour deep dive into a HR-specific topic over lunch. Stay tuned for details on our next session.

If you engage workers, subcontractors or apprentices - even within a small crew - psychosocial health and safety obligations apply to your business.

✔ What psychosocial hazards actually look like on site
✔ Employer obligations under WHS legislation
✔ Common risks including fatigue, conflict, workload pressure and poor communication
✔ Practical steps businesses can take to manage risk and create safer workplaces

This is not a legal lecture or corporate HR seminar. It’s a practical discussion focused on real blue collar environments and the everyday pressures businesses are managing.

When tensions escalate internationally, employees may feel anxious, distracted, or personally affected - particularly if they have family, cultural, or community ties to the regions involved. Conversations about global events can also quickly become polarising in the workplace.

For employers, this creates a delicate balance:
✔ supporting employee wellbeing
✔ maintaining respectful workplace behaviour
✔ ensuring discussions don’t escalate into conflict or discrimination.

Importantly, Australian employers also have a positive duty under workplace health and safety legislation to provide psychologically safe and respectful workplaces, including managing psychosocial hazards such as workplace conflict and distress.

In our latest blog, we explore what Australian employers and leaders should be considering, including the role of Cultural Intelligence in navigating complex and sensitive conversations at work.

HR Health Check Case Study

A regional agribusiness employing 18 permanent staff and up to 40 seasonal workers during harvest recently completed an HR Health Check.

The review identified several risks:
• Seasonal workers were engaged without written employment agreements
• Inductions focused on productivity but limited safety training was documented
• Pay arrangements for seasonal workers were not clearly aligned with the relevant Award

While the business was operating successfully, these gaps could expose it to underpayment claims or workplace safety issues during peak periods.

Key recommendation:
Introduce written seasonal employment agreements, structured inductions and clear award classifications before the next harvest season.

These are the types of issues we’ll be covering in our HR Foundations workshop for Temora and Bland Shire businesses.

📅 When: Thursday 26 March
⏰ Time: 1.00pm – 3.30pm
📍 Where: Temora - venue to be advised

Thanks to Workforce Australia funding, local businesses can attend free of charge.

⚠️ Only 12 places available - 4 already taken.

HR Health Check Case Study

A small regional retail business employing eight staff - a mix of full-time, part-time and casual employees - recently completed a free HR Health Check with Total HRM.

The review identified several common risks:
• Several staff had no written employment agreements
• Casual employees were unclear about their employment status and entitlements
• The owner was uncertain about Retail Award classifications and penalty rates

While the business was running well day to day, these gaps could expose it to underpayment claims or disputes about employment status.

Total HRM's key recommendations:
Introduce clear employment agreements, confirm Award classifications and ensure payroll aligns with current Retail Award requirements.

These are the types of issues we’ll be covering in our 'HR Foundations' workshop for Temora and Bland Shire businesses. This workshop is part of a series Total HRM will be running in Temora over the next year.

📅 When: Thursday 26 March
⏰ Time: 1.00pm – 3.30pm
📍 Where: Temora - venue to be advised

Thanks to Workforce Australia funding, local businesses can attend this first workshop free of charge.

⚠️ Only 12 places available - 4 already taken.
