Meat & Livestock Australia Northern Victoria Livestock Exchange - NVLX Report 12/11/2024. Hear Auctioneer, David Smith's thoughts below.

"In the export market competition was weaker for bullocks while steers 500 to 600kg found more support. Heavy steers sold 6c dearer to average 333c/kg. Bullocks sold to the usual buyers however prices slipped 25c to average 331c/kg. Good crossbred bullocks made from 296 to 323c/kg. The substantially larger offering of cows sold to a big field of buyers and prices lifted as the sale progressed. Heavy cows sold 6c dearer to average 300c/kg. It was a slightly softer market for leaner grades under 520kg, with prices slipping 3c/kg. D3 cows sold from 248c to 272c/kg. Heavy bulls sold to stronger competition resulting in a slightly dearer market. The bulk of the better shaped heavy bulls made from 288 to 313c/kg."

"In the trade sale quality was fair to good however prices declined 10c to 39c/kg. Trade steers with finish fetched 320c to 342c, while the heifer portion made from 260c to 325c/kg.

There were a small number of vealers this week and they sold to solid demand selling from 255c to 345c/kg. Medium weight feede steers sold weaker competition making from 290c to 350c/kg.

In the export market competition was steady for bullocks while steers 500 to 600kg struggled to find buyers. Heavy steers sold 17c cheaper to average 327c/kg. Bullocks sold to the usual buyers to average 356c/kg. The slightly smaller offering of cows sold to a bigger field of buyers and prices strong for big heavy cows to average 294c/kg. It was a slightly softer market for leaner grades under 520kg, with prices slipping 4c/kg. D3 cows sold from 244c to 283c/kg. Heavy bulls sold at varying prices depending on age and shape. The bulk of the better shaped heavy bulls made from 285 to 312c/kg."

"In the trade sale quality improved notably with some outstanding trade cattle offered. Trade steers jumped 61c fetching 335 to 369c, while the heifer portion made from 308c to 355c/kg. There were a bigger number of vealers this week and they sold to stronger competition with the better finished selling from 300c to 365c/kg. Medium weight feeder steers sold strong northern demand making from 320c to 335c/kg. In the export market competition was intense for cattle weighing above 600kg. Heavy steers also sold to strong demand also gaining 12c to average 344c/kg. Bullocks sold to a bigger group of buyers which resulted in a price lift of 19c with the bulk making from 345c to 372c/kg. The smaller offering of cows met a bigger field of buyers and prices improved over all classes. Heavy cows gained 7c to average 296c/kg. It was a strong market for leaner grades under 520kg, with prices ranging from 243c to 270c/kg. Heavy bulls sold at varying prices depending on weight and shape. The bulk of the better shaped heavy bulls made from 285c to 315c/kg."

There were a bigger number of vealers this week and they sold to fluctuating price trends selling from 280c to 355c/kg. Medium weight feeder steers sold steady competition making from 307c to 344c/kg. A few more heifers available to the feedlots sold at 266c to 288c/kg.
In the export market competition was steady. Heavy steers were mostly unchanged to average 331c/kg. Bullocks sold to a bigger group of buyers to average 338c/kg. The slightly larger offering of cows met the usual field of buyers and prices weakened for big heavy cows by 13c/kg to average 288c/kg. It was a solid market for leaner grades under 520kg, with prices unchanged to 2c softer. D3 cows sold from 238c to 264c/kg. Heavy bulls sold at varying prices depending on age and shape."

There were a small number of vealers this week and they sold to mixed prices trends selling from 280c to 340c/kg. Medium weight feeder steers sold to solid competition, making from 335c to 375c/kg. A few more heifers suitable for the feedlots sold at 262c to 306c/kg.
In the export market competition was weaker due to the smaller group of active buyers. Heavy steers gained 4c to average 333c/kg. Bullocks sold to a small group of buyers which resulted in a price decline 12c to average 337c/kg. The reduced offering of cows met a larger field of buyers and prices were similar to last week. Heavy cows traded between 286c to 316c/kg. It was a solid market for leaner grades under 520kg, with prices unchanged to 3c weaker. D3 cows sold from 230c to 274c/kg. Heavy bulls sold at varying prices depending on youth and shape. The bulk of the better shaped heavy bulls made from 290 to 317c/kg."

"In the trade sale quality was fair to good. The better presented trade steers fetched 340cto 360c, while the heifer portion made from 310c to 363c/kg. There were a small number of vealers midway through the sale and they sold to similar prices to the previous sale, selling at 310c to 365c/kg. Medium weight feeder steers sold to weak competition a reflection of the quality, the bulk of the lighter weights making from 311c to 329c/kg. Feeder heifers medium weight sold to dull demand selling from at 256c to 310c/kg.

In the export market competition was solid. Heavy steers gained 8c to average 329c/kg. Bullocks sold to a small group of buyers to average 350c/kg. The reduced offering of cows met a smaller group with very few buyers willing to bid past 310c this resulted in a price correction of 14c/kg. Heavy cows traded between 285c to 319c/kg. It was a weaker market for leaner grades under 520kg, with prices slipping 20c/kg. D3 cows sold from 234c to 270c/kg. Heavy bulls sold at varying prices depending on youth and shape."

"The mixed selection of trade steers and heifers resulted in price fluctuations around quality and finish. Trade steers fetched 349c to 365c, while the better finished heifers made from 300c to 360c/kg. There were a small number of vealers this week and they sold from 270c to 373c/kg. Medium weight feeder steers sold to stronger bidding making from 349c to 386c/kg. A few pens of medium weight heifers to the feedlots sold at 280c to 342c/kg.

In the export market competition was buoyant for well finished bullocks due to an extra processors in the mix. Bullocks improved 8c making from 332c to 390c/kg. Heavy steers 500 to 600kg slipped 30c to average 326c/kg. The bigger offering of cows met a smaller field of buyers. The market lacked the intensity of last weeks with prices falling 19c for well finished types. Heavy cows traded between 303c to 328c/kg. It was a weaker market for leaner grades under 520kg, with prices slipping 30c/kg. D3 cows sold from 234c to 290c/kg. There was some competition from the north for store cows with prices ranging from 250c to 278c/kg."

"There was a slightly bigger selection of trade steers and heifers in the offering making from 310c to 400c/kg. Medium weight feeder steers sold to significantly weaker competition with the medium weights making from 322c to 389c/kg. Lighter weights were hardest hit with the price correction slipping 31c selling at 282c to 365c/kg. Medium weight feeder heifers dipped 10c selling from 290c to 341c/kg.

In the export market quality was very good. Bullocks and steers sold to a small group of buyers with prices ranging from 329c to 388c/kg. In the cow sale it was a standout feature of the sale that good hard well finished cows were in short supply, with secondary types making up a large portion of the offering. Heavy cows were mostly unchanged selling from 318c to 350c/kg.
Leaner grades made from 240c to 306c/kg. Heavy bulls sold at varying prices, the better shaped 275c to 317c/kg."
