Johnsons MME

Johnsons MME Johnsons MME is a large regional accounting practice that has been in business for more than sixty years. The origins of the firm began in 1948. Johnson & Co.

Based in Albury Wodonga, and Wangaratta, we serve clients over a much wider region throughout New South Wales and Victoria. Johnsons MME has a proud history of over sixty years operating in the Albury Wodonga and Wangaratta regions. We are the largest, locally owned accounting and financial advisory practice in the Southern Riverina and North East Victorian regions. The history, longevity and trad

ition of Johnsons MME are important and reflect the firm's ability to stay relevant to its clients over many decades. In fact, Johnsons MME has been the trusted advisor of many local families throughout generations. It was around this period when a thirty-one year old Fred Johnson, having returned from serving the Australian Army in the Middle East and New Guinea during the Second World War, relocated from Sydney to Albury to manage the tax practice of legal firm, Bellbridge Hague. Within five years, Fred Johnson went on to establish an independent accounting practice, F.W. Over the next quarter of a century F.W. Johnson and Co grew and with this growth came much change. New partners were admitted and the name of the firm evolved to Johnson Coughlan and Kay in the 1960's, then Coopers & Lybrand in 1974 and in the late 90's, PricewaterhouseCoopers. Throughout the years, over thirty-five people who were associated and trained with the firm became principals or sole owners of accountancy practices. One of the most successful accountants trained in the practice was Frank O'Halloran, who later went on to become Chief Executive Officer of QBE Insurance. A former partner, Lloyd Lange, became a member of the NSW Legislative Council and was deputy chairman of Abigroup Ltd. In 2000 the Albury practice of PwC was acquired by the Albury based partners, Rod Mullavey, Hugh McKenzie-McHarg and Gary Essex. Today, they are joined by Paul Goonan, Stephen Clarke, Lynette Barber, Ryan Schischka, Stephen Hogan, Dale Goonan, and Grant Lewis. In 2016, Hugh McKenzie-McHarg transitioned from his partnership to an associate of the firm and remains a key person in our audit team. In 2021 Chisholm Partners, Wangaratta, joined Johnsons MME, providing additional opportunities for clients, team members and the broader community. Our services include:

Meet Christopher Baker 🔸 Junior Accountant

Christopher joined Johnsons MME in 2024 and is part of our Business Services team as a Junior Accountant. He enjoys the mental challenge that comes with learning and understanding the complexities of taxation and continues to build his knowledge and experience across a broad range of client work.

Outside of work, Christopher enjoys spending time outdoors with his partner and dog, often heading out for bike rides together. He also has a creative side and is currently writing a fantasy novel in his spare time.

Not content with keeping his challenges confined to the office, Christopher has also completed the Spartan Beast race in Bright, tackling 21 kilometres and 30 obstacles along the way.

There is an important distinction between reporting on what has already happened and helping shape what happens next.

Both are necessary, but they serve different purposes.

While reporting provides a clear view of performance, advisory is what turns that information into direction. It supports decisions around growth, structure, risk and long term planning.

This is where we focus our work.

Whether it is reviewing how a business is structured, planning for succession or improving performance, the objective is to provide insight that leads to better decisions.

Businesses are operating in a very different environment to even a few years ago.

Access to real time information, more complex structures and faster decision making are now part of running a successful business.

That is reflected in how JMME works with clients.

Across digital experience, business performance and specialist tax, the focus is on providing connected advice that supports decisions as they happen, not after the fact.

It is a more integrated way of working, and it continues to develop as client needs change.

Longevity is often described as experience, but on its own that does not mean much.

What matters is whether that experience remains relevant.

Over the years, we have worked with clients through changes in ownership, industry conditions, regulation and growth. Each stage brings a different set of challenges and decisions.

Our approach has continued to adapt alongside those changes. The focus is always on providing advice that reflects the current position of the business and where it is heading, rather than relying on what has worked in the past.

That ongoing evolution is what allows long term relationships to remain valuable.

The strength of any advisory relationship comes back to connection.

Knowing our clients, understanding their industries and being part of the same business community allows us to provide more considered and practical advice.

It also means we can anticipate challenges earlier and support opportunities as they arise.

This is how we approach our work.

Not as a transaction, but as an ongoing relationship that develops over time.

The 2026 Federal Budget has sparked significant discussion around tax reform, investment policy and the future direction of the Australian economy, particularly for regional businesses, investors and employers.

With both the Federal Budget announcements and the Opposition’s response now released, there are a number of proposed changes that could influence business structures, investment decisions, payroll obligations and long term planning over the coming years.

Read our two articles outlining the key proposals from both sides and what they may mean in practical terms; https://johnsonsmme.com.au/blog/.
