For years I have used the '5 ways calculator' to show a businesses potential, the equation is quite simple, there are as you might expect 5 items, these being sources, conversion rates, repeat customers, average sale and profit margin.
The concept is that deliberate, planned actions can lead to an incremental increase across any one or more of the headings with have a compounding effect on the business profitability.
Try it with your business, what can you do to find 1 more customer this week, what can you do to have existing customers return one more time annually, what can you do to increase your average sale by 2% and how can you make a 1% cost saving?
The compounding effect of this exercise could be worth 10's of thousands of dollars.
Give it a try, or give us a call and we can help you through the exercise.

Having a plan on how to upsell like items is all fine and well, getting your team to do it is a completely different ball game, here's a few steps in order to push the envelope here:
1. communicate what and why you're doing in detail to your team.
2. Put up signs, posters, post it notes everywhere as reminders for the first month.
3. Review regularly and discuss, if you're a gym, how many nutrition coaching sessions did we sell this week, how, what did we do to sell them, how did the conversation come about.
4. Reward the highest achievers, nothing motivates people like an impromptu reward, remember these don't need to large sums of money, it could be a ling lunch break, being able to finish an hour early but still get paid one day, get creative!!

We recently did an exercise with a national retailer looking at the pros and cons of opening on public holidays.
What we found is that while there is a slight negative to not opening from a financial perspective. That being the permanent staff that receive pay in lieu of working on a public holiday and the loss of sales minus the extra they would have paid staff to work the public holiday. The benefits of giving already stretched and in some cases highly under resourced teams the day off to refresh and recharge far outweighed the financial cost.
Where it was trialled we found staff to be significantly more productive upon returning to work after the public holiday off.
