A 92-year-old former factory manager stood in front of two machines and performed a purification ceremony over them.

The machines were being removed and replaced.

The ceremony is called kiyoharai.

It was carried out on the factory floor, before anything was hauled away.

This isn't a one-off.

In Japan, tools and machines that served a workplace for years are often sent off with a ceremony instead of just being scrapped.

The idea comes out of Shinto, where an object used and cared for over a long time is treated as more than an object.

Worn-out sewing needles are brought to temples and laid to rest in soft tofu.

Old dolls and calligraphy brushes get memorial services.

Sony's robot dogs were given funerals by priests when they could no longer be repaired.

Factory equipment falls under the same logic.

The machines worked, so they were thanked before they went.
