We recently removed this outdoor CCTV camera and found that the connection behind it had not been adequately protected from the weather.

Water had made its way into the mounting area, and spiders had made themselves quite at home inside.

It’s a good example of something CCTV buyers don’t always get to see.

A camera can be rated for outdoor use, but that doesn’t automatically make the entire installation weatherproof.

The cable entry, connections, mounting points and penetrations all need to be properly protected as well.

Without that protection, moisture, insects and dirt can get in. Over time this can contribute to corrosion, unreliable connections and premature equipment failure.

It’s about installing the entire system with long-term reliability in mind.

🔎 Behind the Job | Why Bathroom Exhaust Fans Matter

A bathroom exhaust fan does much more than clear the steam from your mirror.

Every shower puts a significant amount of moisture into the air. Without effective ventilation, that moisture can settle on ceilings, walls, grout, window frames and cabinetry.

Over time, excess moisture can contribute to:
• Mould and mildew
• Peeling or damaged paint
• Swollen cabinetry and timber
• Condensation on walls and windows
• Rust and deterioration of fittings
• That permanently damp bathroom smell

So, are there any downsides to an exhaust fan?

A properly selected and installed fan has very few, but the wrong fan can create its own problems.

A fan that is too small may run without actually removing enough moisture. A noisy fan often gets switched off too quickly. Poor ducting can restrict airflow, and exhausting moist air into the roof space instead of outside can simply move the moisture problem somewhere you can’t see it.

The fan also needs replacement air to enter the room. Without adequate airflow under or around the bathroom door, even a powerful fan can struggle.

The best result comes from the right fan, correctly sized, properly ducted and used for long enough after showering to remove the remaining moisture.

It’s one of those small electrical details that can make a big difference to the long-term condition of your home.

💡 A simple outdoor lighting upgrade in Angle Vale.

We added a motion sensor to this existing outdoor floodlight so it now switches on automatically when movement is detected.

It’s a small upgrade, but a practical one, especially around entrances, driveways and outdoor areas where you want light available without having to reach for a switch.

The result is better visibility, added convenience and a more useful outdoor lighting setup.

Do you know how to test the safety switches in your switchboard?

It only takes a moment and it’s an important electrical safety check every homeowner should know how to do.

In this quick video, Garry shows you where to find the test button and what should happen when you press it.

When tested, the safety switch should trip and turn the protected circuit off.

If a safety switch doesn’t trip when tested, won’t reset, or you’re unsure about anything inside your switchboard, don’t try to investigate it yourself. Have it checked by a licensed electrician.

A simple test can help confirm that an important part of your home’s electrical protection is operating.

BEHIND THE SCENES | Tight Roof Space

Some jobs definitely give you more room to work than others. 😅

This one involved getting through a very tight roof space, working around insulation, beams and everything else that comes with an established home.

The conduit is in, the job is done and yes, Garry made it back out.

What customers see is the finished result.

What they don’t always see is what happens above the ceiling to get it there safely, neatly and properly.

That’s part of the job, finding a way to make it work without cutting corners.

A small lighting upgrade can make a big difference to how secure and practical an outdoor area feels.

For this job, we installed a new light point and added a motion sensor to automatically activate the lighting when movement is detected.

We also installed an OFF / AUTO / ON override switch, giving the client complete control:

• OFF when the light isn’t required
• AUTO for motion-activated security lighting
• ON when continuous lighting is needed

The result is better visibility, added security and lighting that works around the way the client actually uses their property.
