One of the things I love most about running Best Start is meeting so many incredible women who are building businesses while raising families.

This weekend we visited Cabin 401 Bar & Grill, a local business owned by one of our former clients, and it reminded me why supporting local mums in business is so important.

I love Cabin 401 as it takes me right back home to my teenage years! Aviemore had one of the largest ice rinks in Scotland and it’s where I spent most of my weekends and holidays through high school.

I started ice skating when I was about 5 years old, and spent so many hours at the ice rink. It was also home to the Aviemore Blackhawks ice hockey team, and the atmosphere and energy at a game is amazing!

It brings back many fabulous memories, and it’s amazing to have this on our doorstep in Perth!

If you’re looking for great food and a fun night out, go and watch some ice hockey while you have a meal! Check them out here - https://www.cabin401.com.au/

We'd also love to celebrate more local mums in business. If you are part of our community and own a business, comment below or send us a message. We'd love to feature you.

It was so lovely to have Eilish back in the clinic this week for a refresher and shadowing day ahead of her return from maternity leave.

With a 7-month-old baby of her own, she's been living and breathing breastfeeding, introducing solids and returning to work over the past few months, and I'm so excited to have her back supporting families again.

As a reminder, I'm heading off on annual leave for the next couple of weeks. If you need support while I'm away, please don't wait for me to return. Eilish and Emiko will be here and ready to help, and I know you'll be in excellent hands.

I'll be back in clinic on 23 June. 👋

🤧 Did you know your breastmilk changes when your baby is sick?

One of the most fascinating things about breastfeeding is that breastmilk isn't a static substance, it's dynamic and continually adapting to meet your baby's needs.

Research has shown that breastmilk contains a wide range of immune factors, including antibodies, white blood cells and other bioactive components that help support your baby's developing immune system.

When either mum or baby is exposed to illness, the composition of breastmilk can change, increasing certain protective immune factors. This is one of the many remarkable ways breastmilk continues to support babies beyond nutrition alone.

At Best Start, we're passionate about helping families understand the science behind infant feeding.

I'll be taking a short break and heading off on annual leave from 8th–22nd June.

Before I do, I wanted to share a gentle reminder with any families who may be thinking about booking support during that time.

One thing I hear often is:
"I'll just wait until you're back."

While I am always so grateful for the trust families place in me, I don't want anyone struggling with feeding challenges to put off seeking support. At Best Start, we work as a team 🤍

During my leave, both Emiko and Ailish will be available for appointments. They are highly experienced, incredibly knowledgeable, and just as passionate about supporting families to achieve their feeding goals.

When it comes to breastfeeding and infant feeding challenges, early support really matters. The sooner concerns are identified, the sooner we can put a plan in place and help you move towards the outcome you're hoping for.

Whether you're experiencing:
- Painful feeding
- Concerns about milk supply
- Weight gain worries
- Attachment challenges
- General feeding uncertainty

Please don't feel like you need to wait.

The support you need is available now, and our team is here to help.

Thank you, as always, for trusting us to be part of your feeding journey. I'll look forward to seeing many of you when I return later in June.

Returning to work while breastfeeding can bring a mix of emotions.

For many mothers, it can feel overwhelming trying to navigate feeding, expressing, work schedules, sleep, childcare and the emotional transition of being apart from your baby.

The good news? There is no “perfect” way to do it. Some mothers continue direct breastfeeding around work hours, some use expressed milk, some combine feeding methods - and many find their routine evolves over time.

With the right support, preparation and flexibility, breastfeeding and returning to work can absolutely work together.

Many mothers continue breastfeeding successfully after returning to work by finding a routine that works for them and their baby.
If you’re preparing to return to work and would like individualised support, our team can help tailor a feeding plan around your work hours, your baby’s age and your feeding goals.

Save this post for later or share it with another mother preparing for the return-to-work transition.

Low milk supply can be incredibly stressful and emotional for mothers. But true low supply is often much more complex than simply “not making enough milk”.

Milk production depends on frequent and effective milk removal from the breast and there are many reasons this process can be disrupted, particularly in the early weeks.

Some possible contributors to low supply include:
- Long or difficult labour
- Large amounts of IV fluids during birth
- Early separation from baby
- Ineffective latch or milk transfer
- Poor breastfeeding support early on
- Pumping with incorrect fl**ge sizing or high vacuum settings
- Previous breast surgery
- Lower glandular breast tissue

The good news is that many causes of low supply can be improved with the right support and feeding plan. But most importantly - your feeding journey is not measured by ounces.

Any amount of breastmilk is valuable and beneficial for your baby 🤍

If you’ve ever heard the term triple feeding… you’ll know just how physically and emotionally exhausting it can be!

Feeding baby.
Topping up.
Pumping.
Repeating around the clock.

For many mums, triple feeding becomes part of their breastfeeding journey when extra support is needed with milk supply, weight gain or feeding challenges, but that doesn’t mean you have to navigate it alone.

We’re here to help you feel supported, informed and confident with a feeding plan that works for both you and your baby.

And for soon-to-be mums, we have something exciting coming soon 👀 A brand new membership designed to better support you through your breastfeeding journey from the very beginning.

Because feeding support shouldn’t only happen once things feel hard 🤍

From the moment I became a midwife in 1999, I knew I was passionate about supporting women through motherhood, not just during birth, but especially in those precious weeks and months afterwards.

Over the years, I’ve worked with families all around the world, caring for women through both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies. But one of the experiences that shaped me most wasn’t professional, it was personal.

When I became a mum myself, I faced early breastfeeding challenges with my first son. And like so many mothers, I realised just how overwhelming and emotional those early feeding days can feel when you don’t have the right support around you.

That experience deepened my passion for helping women feel educated, supported, and confident in their feeding journey.

Because breastfeeding isn’t something mums should have to “just figure out” alone.

I’ve spent years supporting families through feeding challenges, newborn transitions, and the ups and downs of early motherhood and now I’m bringing all of that knowledge and support together into a breastfeeding membership for soon-to-be and new mums.

A space designed to support mothers through every stage of their journey from pregnancy preparation and those first newborn feeds, right through to established feeding and weaning.

My goal is to create a space where women feel empowered with evidence-based education, practical guidance, realistic strategies, and compassionate support so feeding your baby can feel less overwhelming and more connected.
