I randomly came across a reel from glasshouse this morning, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since.
The story tells of Calile Malouf, who arrived in Brisbane from Lebanon in 1892 with little more than determination and a dream of creating a better future for his family.
Sometimes, as estimators and project managers, we're focused on budgets, programmes, drawings, contracts and deadlines. We help bring landmark projects to life, but we don't always get to hear the stories behind them. We see the building, but not always the generations of perseverance, sacrifice and vision that made it possible.
That's what made this story so powerful.
More than a century after arriving in Brisbane, Calile Malouf's name now sits proudly above one of Queensland's most celebrated buildings, The Calile Hotel.
As I watched the reel, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride knowing that Firerite Services had the privilege of being responsible for the design, installation and certification of the fire protection systems throughout this incredible development with Hutchinson Builders
Like many aspects of fire protection, our work sits quietly in the background, unseen by most who visit. Yet it helps protect the people, memories and experiences created within those walls every day.
Looking back now and understanding the history behind the name makes being part of this project feel even more special.
Thank you to glasshouse for sharing such a beautifully researched piece of Brisbane history.
"The man who was told he couldn't own land. His name is now on one of Brisbane's most iconic buildings."
What a legacy.
