Whirl Recycling

Whirl Recycling We love to recycle. Lisa and Adrian Saunders created a new social enterprise, Whirl, that makes recycling pay for everyone! So, everyone gets to benefit!

We'll find a new life and home for your electronics - with people who'll repair and reuse them. They're happy to pay us, so we'll share the love right back to you with 50% of the profits! You can then keep the funds for your own use, donate them to Whirl to help us get off the ground or help us plant trees through B1G1. Organisations such as schools, charities, religious institutions or sustainabi

lity groups can hold recycling drives and use them as fundraisers. Items we take are: desktop computers, laptops, mobile phones, tablets, iPads, iPods, cameras (digital and film, SLR, Poloroid and point ’n' click), computer games, Gameboys, Nintendos, Xbox, tools, cords and cables, small to medium-size power tools, watches, jewellery (9ct gold or other but not costume), hard drives, vintage mobile phones, vintage radios - basically anything electrical of value that can be mailed. We've taken what we learned from Arnies Recon to create a new model of recycling that turns good into more good.

A massive thank you to the Berowra Heights community and collection crew who did another outstanding event this past weekend. We're so grateful to you all for taking this on and enabling the community to recycle their electronics. 🥰🥰🥰

They're at it again! Many many thanks to the amazing crew up in Berowra Heights for putting this together and a huge shout out to the Barcan's for once again allowing everyone to flood their garage with stuff....

It’s on again! Berowra Sustainability Co-Op are hosting our sixth community recycling collection in conjunction with Whirl Recycling. Just in time for council clean-up! Sadly, we can no longer take small domestic appliances but there’s still a lot we take.

Choose one of our 3 times (below) to drop off your unwanted electronics, cables, computers, laptops, phones, small powered garden tools (no lawnmowers), drones, GPS, X-rays, transistors, watches, fairy lights (and more!) for recycling and (if possible) re-use. Nothing goes to landfill. For a full list of what can and can’t be taken, see the FAQ section of the Whirl Recycling website (e.g. no TVs, fridges, microwaves, air fryers, oil heaters, electric toothbrushes or printers). Or text Whirl on 0480 616 800.

Drop-off times:

Friday 29 May, 2pm-5pm

Saturday 30 May, 1pm-5pm

Sunday 31 May, 9am-1pm

Drop-off location: 32 Currawong Rd Berowra Heights

Eight years ago I bought this Electrolux fridge believing I was buying quality that would last.

I loved this fridge. I had visions of it lasting a couple of decades. Then two days ago it died. Then the fun began.

Years ago I had an old-school repair guy. He fixed things properly. He charged fairly. He sourced parts without drama. He believed appliances should last.

Then he retired.

So, now I get the story of expensive call out fees, costly replacement parts and the "it's probably better to replace rather than install new parts in an "ageing machine" talk.

Yes, they actually called my fridge ageing.

Eight year old fridges should not be considered "ageing".

So I caved. But I'm not buying another Electrolux one. They've lost my business.

Companies love to talk about sustainability while continuing to manufacture products where repair is difficult, replacement is easier, and longevity is a thing of the past.

It is costing consumers thousands.

And it is costing the earth far more.

Re Place needs our help!

They were early recycling partners of Arnies, then provided an amazing hub for Whirl.

Their impact is unquestionable with zero waste going to landfill. But, after all this time at the sustainability hub, Council has made a call for tender of their space!

Please sign the petition to keep them there.

After collecting more than 3 million items from nearly 40,000 homes and businesses over the past 7 years, we noticed some patterns.

Here’s one that surprised me.

Vacuum cleaners. Specifically Dysons.

When we used to collect vacuums, they were the brand we received most often.

But what really stood out was their age.

Most were between 6 months and 2 years old and worked perfectly!

In many cases, all they needed was a simple filter clean and they were back to full performance.

By comparison, when we picked up brands like Miele, Electrolux, or the occasional Kirby, they were usually well over 10 years old, worn out, and ready for a send off.

That difference stuck with me.

I wonder, is it because people want the latest and greatest? Or don't understand maintenance? It is too hard?

It makes me wonder how many appliances are being thrown away simply because no one was told how to maintain them.

If you own a vacuum, here’s a tip:

Check and clean your filters regularly. It can make a huge difference to performance and lifespan.

And now I’m curious.

Have you ever thrown out a vacuum that later turned out to be fixable?

We get asked a lot why we can't take printers. I hope this helps with understanding. I wish it could change the situation.

Out of all the electronics manufactured today, the absolute worst are printers.

I call them a crime against humanity.

Why?

Printers are made mostly of plastic, with very little recoverable value. That means the cost of collecting and recycling them often far exceeds the value of the materials inside. In short, no one can afford to recycle them.

They're built to break:
- Printers contain fragile internal parts that can't last.
- The waste ink pads shut machines down when hidden counters (often prematurely) say they're “full”.
- Repairs cost more than buying a new machine.

Then there’s the ink.
- Printer inks contain petroleum oils, heavy metals, and volatile chemicals.
- Those chemicals are released into the air during ordinary use they cause health issues as well as pollute the air.
- New cartridges costs so much it's often cheaper to replace the printer than refill it.
- When dumped into landfill, the cartridges leach toxins into our soil, water, and air.

Plus, printers are not biodegradable, so in landfill, they can sit there for 400 to 1000 years.

Unfortunately, printers are far more likely than other electronics to end up in landfill.

Not because we don’t care.

Because the manufacturers make responsible disposal nearly impossible and uneconomical.

Worried about your data? You should be.

But smashing your own hard drive can put your health at risk.

Shattering, drilling, or crushing drives releases toxic materials such as lead, mercury and cadmium. Anyone nearby can inhale them.

It also spreads fine particles into your home and the environment.

At Whirl Recycling, we handle data destruction safely and professionally.

If a device can be securely reset, we do.
If not, we wipe it using Active@KillDisk to recognised international standards, or physically shred the drive before it is smelted.

Still concerned? Call, text or email us. We’re happy to explain exactly how your data is protected.

It’s why banks, consulates, NSW Government, financial and IT companies trust us with their devices.

Suzon’s exhibit was fascinating! This was my favourite piece. She explains the different parts made from Samsung phones. In case you’re wondering what they’re made of…
