The recent evacuation at Newmont’s Cadia Gold Mine following an Australian magnitude earthquake of 4.5MLa is a timely reminder of how critical preparedness is in underground operations.

All underground personnel were safely accounted for, with no injuries reported. It’s an outcome that reflects not just training and procedures, but the reliability of the systems they had in place.

Underground emergencies are rarely predictable. When visibility is reduced and pressure is high, outcomes depend on infrastructure that performs as intended. Escapeways, access routes and ventilation controls are not just compliance items. They are operational systems that must function under real-world conditions.

As underground mines continue to increase in depth and complexity, robust, fit‑for‑purpose safety infrastructure will remain fundamental to protecting people when it matters most.
