To the mum reading this at 2am - this one’s for you. 💛

The first months of motherhood are beautiful and brutal in equal measure. And somewhere in the middle of the feeding and the not-sleeping and the constant questioning yourself - it’s easy to feel like everyone else has figured it out except you.

They haven’t. They’re just not posting the 3am cries.

You are not failing. You are adjusting to one of the biggest changes a human being can go through. And you’re doing it while running on no sleep and probably cold coffee.

If you’re finding things really hard right now - please reach out to someone. Your GP, PANDA, a midwife, or just a friend. You don’t have to do this alone.

Save this for a hard day. Share it with a mum who needs it. 🌿

Can we talk about the pressure for a second? 💛

The pressure to breastfeed. The pressure to keep going when it’s really hard. The pressure to feel like you’re failing if you can’t.

Here’s what I know after years of working with mums as a midwife and IBCLC:

Fed is always best. AND if breastfeeding is what you want, you deserve proper support to get there. Not a pamphlet. Not a five-minute hospital visit. Real, individualised support.

Your mental health matters too. If breastfeeding is making you miserable, that’s important information - not a moral failing.

However you are feeding your bub, you’re doing an incredible job. 🌿

Hands up if you’ve ever watched your baby feed for the third time in two hours and thought “there must be something wrong with my milk” 🙋‍♀️
You are not alone and your milk is not running out.

Cluster feeding is one of the most misunderstood parts of early breastfeeding and it’s one of the top reasons mums reach for formula or stop feeding altogether. When actually, everything is working exactly as it should.

📣PSA: The clocks go back next weekend ⏰

Australia will gain an extra hour of sleep!! Parents of babies will gain absolutely nothing 😭
Whilst everyone else is smug about their “bonus hour”, you’ll be staring at the ceiling at 4:58am wondering if this is just your life now.

IT’S NOT. Here’s why this happens and what to do about it 👇🏻
Your baby runs on a biological clock that does not care about daylight savings. Does not negotiate. Does not sleep in. The sun rises earlier = bub rises earlier. It’s giving toddler energy at an ungodly hour.

The fix:
🐢 start shifting bedtime 10-15mins later each day next week
⚡️ do nothing and survive the chaos
↔️ meet in the middle and shift gradually over a few days after the time change
🛠️ Whichever method you go for - keep your routine consistent, try some block out blinds if you really need to and give it a couple of weeks to settle.

You didn’t survive the newborn phase to be taken down by a one hour time change ☕️💪🏻

Is your bub clicking, slipping off the breast, tires easily during a feed or feeds constantly but never seems satisfied?...

Is your bub clicking, slipping off the breast, tires easily during a feed or feeds constantly but never seems satisfied? 👀
It could be a tongue tie 👅🩺

Here’s what you need to know 👇

Tongue tie (ankyloglossia) happens when the tissue under the tongue (a frenulum) is too tight or short (it’s not just the fact that baby has one - we all do!). Some bubs with tongue ties find it harder to latch deeply and feed effectively. Not all tongue ties are created equally however, which means, not all require treatment or intervention. Think of it as nature’s version of a chocolate variety pack.

Signs to look for:
🔹 Painful or damaged ni***es
🔹 Bub clicking or losing suction at the breast
🔹 Unsettled feeding, lots of wind or reflux
🔹 Slow weight gain
🔹 Feeling like bub is always hungry

What can help?
✅ See a lactation consultant (hi, that’s me 👋) for a full feeding assessment
✅ See your maternal & child health nurse or GP or paediatric speech therapist
✅ Work on positioning and attachment while you wait
✅ Know that with the right support, most mums can keep breastfeeding 💛

A tongue tie diagnosis doesn’t automatically mean you need to stop breastfeeding - it just means you may need a bit more support until everyone adjusts. Depending on the severity of the tongue tie and whether feeding is affected - some may require more specific intervention, however this is on a case by case basis.

Please reach out if you have concerns or aren’t sure. You don’t have to figure this out alone. 💛

Is your baby actually latched well? 👀

A shallow latch is one of the most common causes of ni**le pain and low milk transfer… and it’s not always obvious in the moment.

Here are 3 signs your baby’s latch might be too shallow 👇

1. Your ni**le looks misshapen after a feed 🥜
If your ni**le comes out looking flattened, creased, or like a new lipstick - that’s a sign bub isn’t taking enough breast tissue into their mouth.

2. You’re wincing through the whole feed 😬
Some initial tenderness in the early days is normal, but pain that lasts beyond the first 30–60 seconds (or hurts the entire feed) is your body’s way of saying something’s off.

3. You can hear clicking during the feed 🔊
A clicking or smacking sound often means bub is losing suction mid-feed. This can affect how much milk they’re transferring and lead to a frustrated, unsettled baby.

✨ A good latch shouldn’t hurt, and it shouldn’t be a guessing game.

If any of these sound familiar, please reach out - that’s exactly what I’m here for 💛

B***s and Breastfeeding: Our breasts are sisters, not twins 👯‍♀️

They are often a different size. Or shape. The ni**le may point in a different direction. The letdown can be faster on one side vs the other. And there’s always a star performer 🌟(the one that produces more than the other).

Totally normal. Totally common. Totally fine.

But if your little one starts showing a preference for one side over the other - it’s still really important to offer both breasts equally to keep your supply up on both sides 👩🏼‍🍼👩🏼‍🍼

Noticing some changes or feeling unsure? An IBCLC can take a look and help you figure out what’s going on 💛
