WHSQ Proactive Compliance Checks: Is Your Manufacturing Site Ready?

⚠️ Attention Queensland Manufacturers β€” WHSQ Inspectors Are Active Now.
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) is currently conducting proactive compliance checks across manufacturing workplaces through to the end of June 2026.

The inspection focus areas include:
βœ… Moving plant risks and controls
βœ… Pedestrian and vehicle interaction
βœ… Onsite traffic management arrangements
βœ… Health and Safety Representative (HSR) participation and consultation processes
βœ… General WHS management system compliance
Inspectors are attending sites unannounced. The question you need to ask is: if an inspector walked through your site today, would your business be ready?

At Bramwell Partners, we've developed a practical Manufacturing Compliance Readiness Review β€” a structured, hands-on assessment designed to help you:
πŸ” Review your moving plant risk controls
πŸ” Assess pedestrian segregation and traffic flow
πŸ” Check your SWMS, SOPs, and inspection registers
πŸ” Verify HSR involvement and consultation records
πŸ” Identify gaps before a regulator does

Don't wait for an inspector to find the gaps. Let's find them first.

May Wrap-Up: 5 HR and Safety Topics Worth Your Attention Before June

As May wraps up, here's a quick summary of the key topics we've covered this month and a few simple steps to carry into June.

πŸ“‹ Employment Contracts
Have yours been reviewed since the Closing Loopholes Act changes? A straightforward check is worth it.
βš–οΈ Codes of Practice
These are now legally enforceable minimum standards. Make sure you know which ones apply to your business.
🧠 Psychosocial Hazards
Managing mental health at work is a WHS legal obligation β€” not just a wellbeing initiative. If you don't have a plan in place, it's time to build one.
πŸ›‘οΈ Sexual Harassment Prevention Plan (QLD)
If you're in Queensland and haven't yet developed this document, add it to your June priorities.
πŸͺ‘ Ergonomics
Musculoskeletal injuries remain the most common category of work-related injury in Australia. A workstation check costs nothing and can make a real difference.

You don't need to tackle everything at once. Pick one thing from this list and move it forward.
As always, if you'd like a hand with any of these, our team is here. We work with SMEs across Brisbane and Central Queensland β€” practically, affordably, and without the jargon.

Today is Wear White at Work Day 🀍

This day is about showing solidarity with people living with mental illness, and acknowledging the families, friends, and colleagues of those affected by su***de.

In a workplace context, it's also a reminder of the role every one of us plays.
One in five Australians will experience mental illness this year. Many of them are in our teams, our networks, and our own families.

The most meaningful thing a workplace can do isn't a poster or a policy, it's building a culture where people genuinely feel they can speak up, without fear of judgement.

A few simple things that matter today:
🀍 Wear white if you can, and take a moment to explain why to those around you
πŸ’¬ Check in with someone on your team β€” genuinely
πŸ“‹ Make sure your EAP information is visible and easy to find
πŸ’™ Remind your team that asking for help is a sign of strength

To anyone who is finding things difficult right now β€” you are not alone, and support is available.

Performance Management: What a Fair Process Actually Looks Like

Managing a performance issue is one of the less comfortable parts of leading a team. But how you approach it makes a significant difference for the employee, and for your business.

The problems we most often see don't come from employers who acted too early. They come from situations where the process wasn't clearly documented along the way.

Here's what a fair and practical performance management process looks like:

πŸ“ Clear expectations from the start β€” documented in a position description and covered in onboarding
πŸ’¬ Regular, honest feedback β€” not just raised at an annual review
πŸ“‹ A formal improvement plan when issues persist β€” with realistic timeframes and genuine support provided
πŸ“ Records of every key conversation and agreed action

The purpose of a good performance process is to give the person a real opportunity to improve. With the right support, that often works out well.

But if it doesn't, having a well-documented process means you can make difficult decisions with clarity and confidence.

If you're currently working through a performance situation and would like a second opinion, feel free to reach out. Happy to have a confidential conversation.

National Reconciliation Week begins this week (27 May – 3 June) πŸŸ‘πŸ”΄βš«

This is an important time for Australian businesses to pause and consider how they're building workplaces where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are genuinely welcomed, respected, and supported.
A few things worth reflecting on as an employer:

🀝 Does your business have a Reconciliation Action Plan β€” or is it something you've been wanting to look into?
πŸ“š Has your team had access to cultural awareness learning?
🌿 Do your leave and flexibility policies acknowledge cultural and community obligations?
πŸ—£οΈ Are Indigenous employees able to raise concerns and feel genuinely heard?

Reconciliation isn't something that happens once a year on a specific date. It's reflected in how you hire, how you lead, and the culture you maintain day to day.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we work and live, and pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging.

If you're looking to strengthen your policies around cultural inclusion and safety, we're happy to have a conversation.

What Are Job Seekers in 2026 Actually Looking For?

Finding and keeping good people continues to be one of the most common challenges we hear from Queensland business owners.

The job market in 2026 looks different to what it did a few years ago. Candidates are more informed, and the factors that influence their decisions have shifted.

Based on what we're seeing across the businesses we work with, here's what tends to matter:
🏠 Genuine flexibility β€” not just the policy on paper, but a real culture that supports it
πŸ“ˆ Clear pathways β€” people want to know there's somewhere to grow within the business
🧠 Psychological safety β€” they want to be somewhere they can raise issues without fear
πŸ’° Fair and transparent pay
🀝 Leadership they can learn from and respect

Pay still matters, of course it does. But for smaller businesses that can't always compete on salary alone, the other factors become even more important.

πŸ’Ό Need a hand with HR or finding the right people for your business?
We work with Queensland businesses every day on exactly these challenges; from hiring strategies to building workplace cultures that actually retain great staff.

Fatigue at Work: More Than Just Feeling Tired

Fatigue is one of those things that often gets normalised in small business particularly during busy periods or when you're short-staffed.

But under Australian WHS law, workplace fatigue is formally recognised as a psychosocial hazard. That means employers have an obligation to manage it and not just accept it as part of the job.

It's not just about productivity. Fatigue can contribute to:
⚠️ Errors and poor decision-making
⚠️ Increased risk of incidents and injuries
⚠️ Long-term physical and mental health impacts on your team
⚠️ Higher staff turnover if it becomes a chronic issue

Some straightforward things to consider in your own business:
β€’ Are workloads realistic and reasonably distributed across your team?
β€’ Are there team members consistently working outside their contracted hours?
β€’ Are shift patterns (where relevant) allowing for adequate recovery time?
β€’ Is working late quietly expected, even if it's never been formally stated?

You don't need a complex system to start addressing this. Often, an honest conversation with your team surfaces more than you'd expect.

How does your business manage busy periods without burning people out? πŸ‘‡

Workplace Investigations: When Is It Time to Bring in External Support?

Handling a workplace complaint is one of the more difficult situations a business owner or manager will face. Getting the process right matters for everyone involved.

In many cases, an internal process is completely appropriate. But there are times when an independent investigator is clearly the better choice.

Here's when it's worth considering external support:
πŸ“Œ The complaint involves a senior leader or business owner
πŸ“Œ There are multiple parties with very different accounts of events
πŸ“Œ A previous internal attempt didn't resolve the matter
πŸ“Œ You have a genuine or perceived conflict of interest
πŸ“Œ The matter is complex enough that legal proceedings are a realistic possibility

Bringing in an external investigator isn't about distrust but it's about fairness and due process for everyone, including you as the employer.

A well-run process protects the people involved and helps the business move forward. A process that isn't handled well can create significantly bigger problems down the track.

If you're currently navigating a workplace complaint and aren't sure of the right path forward, we're happy to have a confidential conversation. No obligation.
