The office may look a little different this week for Maria☀️🌴💻
One of the perks of being a psychologist is that, thanks to technology, we can still stay connected to our clients and practice from afar.

Not a bad spot to answer a few emails #. 💙

Hi, Maria here, Principal Psychologist at Rise Up. 👋

As psychologists, we often talk about attachment. As a mum, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing it firsthand.

This photo was taken when my son was just two months old.
Moments like these may seem small, but their impact is profound. Every time you respond to your child’s need for comfort, connection, or confidence, you are building a bond of trust.

Attachment theorist John Bowlby believed that children are biologically wired to seek safety and security from their caregivers. Through thousands of everyday interactions—holding them close, meeting their needs, sharing eye contact, offering comfort when they’re distressed. They learn a powerful lesson:

“The world is safe, and I am worthy of care.”

Looking back at this photo, I see more than a shared gaze. I see the silent conversation taking place between us:

“I’m here.”
“I trust you.”
“You’re safe with me.”

And that is where attachment is formed and strengthened. ❤️

Hi there Ervin, we see you 👋✨🌈

We see your passion for understanding the person behind the difficulties, not just the labels or challenges they may be experiencing 🧠💛

We see the warmth, care, and collaborative approach you bring to sessions, creating a space where children, adolescents, adults and families feel safe, supported, and understood 🤝🌱🫶✨

We see your neuroaffirming and LGBTQIA+ affirming approach, and your passion for therapy, assessments, emotional wellbeing, and helping people better understand themselves and navigate life’s challenges 🌈💭🌻🩵

And most of all, we see someone who genuinely wants people to feel heard, valued, and accepted for who they are 🌟🤍✨

We’re so lucky to have you as part of the Rise Up family 🥹💛🌸🫶✨

As EMDR therapists, resourcing is an important part of the process. Before moving into trauma reprocessing, we often spend time helping children build skills to stay within their window of tolerance, learning ways to feel safe, calm, and supported.

We might build stress-management skills, explore emotions using tools like feeling thermometers or Zones of Regulation, and strengthen internal supports.

These moments can look playful, creative, or simple from the outside, but they often hold deep therapeutic value. They help create the foundation children need before doing harder work.

Some of the resourcing activities I commonly use include:

✨ Happy & Calm Place
✨ Container Exercise
✨ Butterfly Hug
✨ Diaphragmatic Breathing
✨ Nurturing Figure Imagery

Today I’m sharing a glimpse into one child’s Happy Calm Place. A space created through imagination, safety, and connection. 🌈

We often talk about helping children regulate emotions, but parents have nervous systems too.

Some days our children struggle. Some days we struggle.

And some days both happen at the same time.

To the parents who have cried in the car, left early, questioned themselves, or wondered if they’re doing enough , you are not alone. 💛

Have you ever had a moment where both you and your child were having a hard day? 👇

Therapists know fidgets aren’t just for kids… 👀

Honestly? We use them too ✨

Different fidgets for different moods 💜

😤 anger & frustration
🧠 focus & concentration
✨ calming
💜 regulation

They aren’t just fun… they’re functional too.

Which one are you picking first? 👇

We spend so much time trying to teach our kids about life…
and then they humble us with a random car conversation, a meltdown in aisle 4, or a cuddle after the hardest day. 💜

Kids have a way of teaching us about patience, repair, slowing down, big feelings, and what actually matters.

Honestly? Sometimes they’re the real therapists. 😉

At Rise Up, we love supporting children, teens and families in a way that feels safe, connected and genuinely human.
