Has your business received a safety improvement notice?

Receiving an improvement notice from SafeWork NSW, WHSQ, WorkSafe ACT or another workplace safety regulator can be confronting, particularly when the requirements are technical and the compliance timeframe is short.

Psychosocial risk management is now firmly on the workplace compliance radar for NSW employers.

From 1 July 2026, the NSW Codes of Practice have become a stronger reference point for how businesses are expected to manage workplace risks, including risks to psychological health.

For small and medium businesses, this need not be complicated.

A practical starting point may include:

• having a psychosocial risk management policy
• speaking with workers about workplace pressures and concerns
• using short employee check-in surveys
• documenting issues raised and action taken
• reviewing workload, communication, support and workplace behaviours
• updating handbooks, WHS processes and reporting procedures

The key is being able to show that the business has considered the risks, taken practical steps, and reviewed whether those steps are working.
