SCREEN PRINTING IS EASY TO UNDERESTIMATE BECAUSE MUCH OF THE SKILL IS HIDDEN BEFORE THE FIRST PRODUCTION PRINT.

The finished image depends on a series of connected decisions:

- Mesh selection
- Stencil exposure
- Ink viscosity
- Squeegee selection, angle and pressure
- Print speed and positioning
- Curing conditions

Each can influence colour, definition, opacity, adhesion and durability.

Depending on the ink, substrate and application, screen printing can also apply a thicker ink deposit than many digital processes. This can support strong opacity and performance in demanding applications.
That matters when a small label, panel or nameplate must remain consistent across an ongoing production run.

Modern machinery supports the process, but the equipment list alone does not control the result.

Process knowledge and operator judgement do.

A SMALL LABEL CAN HOLD UP A HIGH-VALUE SHIPMENT.

Labels may represent only a small part of the finished product.

They often receive little attention until the last pack is opened.
Without the correct label, a product may be missing a compliance marking, operating instruction, serial number or required piece of branding.

Most manufacturing work may be complete, but the finished unit may still not be ready to ship.

For procurement, production-planning and supply-chain teams, the component’s replenishment process therefore matters as much as its physical specification.

A MACHINE CAN BE MECHANICALLY SOUND AND STILL BECOME DIFFICULT TO OPERATE IF ITS INTERFACE HAS FAILED.

The switches may work. The electronics may perform correctly. However, the printed instructions are scratched, the button labels are difficult to read or the display window has become damaged.

A graphic panel is not simply a decorative cover.

For equipment manufacturers and industrial designers, it can be a functional part of the user interface - identifying controls, communicating instructions, providing display windows and protecting critical information.

One durability option is to reverse-print the graphic onto the back of clear polycarbonate or polyester. The user views the information through the material while the printed image remains protected behind it.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN A PRODUCT-BRANDING BRIEF

Need a badge, nameplate, label or graphic component?
A clearer initial brief can help your supplier recommend the right solution faster.

Include as much of the following information as possible

⚪ Application:
Where will the component be used?

⚪ Surface:
What material, coating or texture will it be applied to?

⚪ Environment:
Will it face UV, heat, moisture, abrasion, chemicals or cleaning products?

⚪ Dimensions:
What size and shape are required?

⚪ Quantity:
Is it a prototype, initial production run or ongoing program?
Artwork:
Is approved artwork available, or is artwork support required?

A good supplier will still ask questions.

WHY SURFACE TESTING MATTERS

An adhesive that works perfectly on one surface may fail completely on another.
Even when two surfaces look similar, they may behave very differently.
Consider powder-coated metal.
Its texture, coating chemistry and surface energy can vary between suppliers, colours, finishes and production batches.
The same applies to plastics, painted components and composite materials.
That is why adhesive selection should not be based only on a general description such as “metal” or “plastic”.

Useful testing considers:
• The actual production surface
• Cleaning and preparation methods
• Application temperature
• Pressure and dwell time
• Heat, moisture and chemical exposure
