When concrete blows out on a bored pier, the instinct is to reach for a hydraulic hammer. That instinct is wrong.

Impact transfers shock into the structure. In foundations, basements, and shaft construction, the stakes are higher - the surface needs to be correctly profiled before shotcrete or wall finishing can proceed. Get it wrong and you compromise foundation integrity and project delays.

A drum cutter removes only what needs to come off. Rotary cutting action, no shock load, surface left ready for the next stage.

The clip above: blown-out concrete on bored piers, ground back to profile on a basement dig .
No structural damage.
Surface ready for shotcrete.
Programme continues.

Focus configures drum cutters to excavators from 3.5T to 50T - matched to the carrier, the material, and the job.

𝗙𝗶𝘁𝘇𝘆’𝘀 𝗙𝘂𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁

The buckets dropped.
The screams were loud.
And yes....it was chilly.

Today the Focus Machinery crew took on this year’s Go Ahead and Dunk challenge for FightMND - with an excavator bucket full of icy water, a huge crowd, plenty of laughs and an even better cause behind it all.

A massive thank you to everyone who has donated, showed up, shared the fundraiser and backed the team today. The support has been unreal.

We’ll be posting the full event video next week along with the final fundraising total… but there’s still time to help us push the number even higher before we wrap it up.

The Focus Machinery team is once again taking on an excavator bucket full of icy water in support of FightMND.

This Friday 5th June, the crew will be getting dunked to help raise funds and awareness for Australians living with motor neurone disease.

It’s cold. It’s uncomfortable. And it’s for a cause that matters.

If you’d like to support the team, every donation goes towards vital research and support services through FightMND.

Thanks to everyone who has already contributed and helped get behind the cause.

Confined work zones, suspended loads, overhead assets and live interfaces all increase the risk of overloads, unsafe movement and non-compliant lifting operations.

This Volvo excavator has been fitted with a Prolec PME500 Lift Management System - engineered to provide operators with greater visibility and control during lifting activities.

The system helps address common project challenges including:
• Safe lifting capacity uncertainty across the working envelope
• Overload risk during suspended load operations
• Height and slew restriction requirements near assets and exclusion zones
• Reduced visibility in congested work areas
• Increasing compliance requirements on Tier 1 infrastructure projects

Features include:
• Real-time safe working load monitoring
• Height and slew limiting
• Visual and audible overload warnings
• Virtual wall and exclusion zone controls
• Motion cut functionality to help prevent unsafe movement

Because on high-risk infrastructure projects, lifting safety starts before the load leaves the ground.

Last year the team took on an excavator bucket full of icy water for FightMND.

This year… we’re doing it again. Bigger team. Bigger dunk.

On Friday 5th June, the Focus Machinery crew will once again be freezing for a cause that matters - helping raise funds and awareness for FightMND and the fight against motor neurone disease.

Pre-inducted.
Ready to Dig.

No delays for approvals.
No setup on site.

As part of the Spark North-East Link program, excavation works at the Lower Plenty Cut and Cover section required production in confined conditions through hard rock ahead of a scheduled TBM breakthrough milestone.

The project required a machine capable of maintaining production while operating within restricted excavation conditions where a standard configuration would compromise manoeuvrability and control.

Focus Machinery specified a 35t short stick CAT 335 tunnel configuration with fire suppression, paired with a Montabert hammer package and full Checkrite compliance preparation prior to mobilisation.

The short stick configuration allowed the machine to operate effectively within the excavation envelope while maintaining the breakout performance required for hard rock conditions.

All equipment was prepared under Focus Machinery’s Ready-to-Dig approach, ensuring:
* Verified compliance documentation
* Pre-delivery inspections and testing
* Correct machine and attachment configuration
* Site-ready presentation for immediate use

Because on major tunnelling projects, programme certainty starts long before the first bucket hits the ground.

𝟭𝟬𝗺𝗺 𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. 𝗡𝗼 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿.

Mick from MKD Constructions needed to level and set fall on a horse arena - with accuracy within 10mm.

That level of finish leaves no margin:
• Too high → drainage issues
• Too low → rework
• Inconsistent → ongoing maintenance problems

To get there, the Level Best box blade needed to be properly integrated and calibrated to his machine before it ever hit site.

We handled the commissioning - configuring the laser-guided, semi-automatic system so it performed exactly as intended.

When it arrived, it was ready to work.
No setup delays.
No chasing levels.

Once on the ground:
• Consistent grading across the full surface
• Accurate fall achieved within tolerance
• Minimal manual trimming required

Ready to Dig means precision work starts immediately - not after adjustments.

Across Australia, vehicle incidents remained the leading cause of worker fatalities in 2024 - accounting for 42% of all workplace deaths.^

For safety managers on active construction and infrastructure sites, managing the interaction between mobile plant and workers on foot remains one of the hardest risks to control.

AI-powered pedestrian detection systems are changing that. Using radar and camera technology, these systems give operators real-time awareness of people entering blind zones - alerting before contact becomes possible.

When a project specifies detection technology, Focus Machinery supplies and installs the system before the machine arrives on site and ensures operators are trained prior to mobilisation.

No retrofitting in the yard. No setup delays. No gaps in operator awareness. The machine arrives compliant, configured and Ready to Dig.

Technology doesn’t replace traffic management plans or safe systems of work - but it does add another layer of awareness in high-risk environments where visibility matters.

The technology exists. The evidence is clear. The question is whether it’s on your mandatory requirements list yet.

Research from MATES in Construction shows workers who feel supported and connected at work are more likely to seek help early and support others around them^.

Sometimes it’s simply:
“𝐇𝐨𝐰’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠?”
“𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞?”
“𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝?”

No big speech.
Just people looking out for people.
