Savaterre Wines - Beechworth

Savaterre Wines - Beechworth The mild summer days, cool climate elevation combined with the rolling foothills of the Victorian Alps was the magic “terroir” combination sought by Keppell.

Nestled in the mountains of northeastern Victoria, just outside the picturesque town of Beechworth, lays the Savaterre vineyard. The site was “discovered“ in 1996 by Keppell Smith, owner and winemaker, after an expansive search through Australia’s quality wine regions. Intensely focused on the creation of outstanding, individualistic wines far removed from the mainstream , Keppell looks more to the

wines, winemaking and viticulture of the Old World as his inspiration. Ranging from vineyard aspect through to the use of natural yeasts and French barriques, he combines the art and the science of winemaking in his drive to produce the finest of wines. The region itself is blessed with beautiful views, fantastic local produce, outstanding dining and of course the historic town of Beechworth. It has a growing wine presence and has recently been recognised as an independent wine region.

SAVATERRE CHARDONNAY 2015

Beechworth and chardonnay is a conversation we often have, but perhaps it’s at a little quieter volume than other regions over the past little while. Savaterre makes a good case to turn up the hearing aids.
Honey and toast scents, flinty sulphur, complex fruit profile with lots of citrus, then stone fruit, exotic tropicals, with a mesh of savoury, nutty aromas in the mix.

I think I like the cut of the jib here.

Firm edge to the palate, puff of sulphur, chunks of limestone and chalk, zesty acidity underlying, really tightly wound fruit flavour but rewarding in its firm, bitey feel. Like alternating between chewing on a lemon wedge and licking limey pumice.

Wow, good to be alive.

This has some personality. Distinct too, if not a little out of the box for Savaterre.

Kind review last week from Toni Paterson MW from Huon Hooke’s The Real Review. (www.therealreview.com)

Savaterre Chardonnay 2015, Beechworth, AUD $65

This is, without a doubt, a compelling wine.
It has a beguiling richness, and although there are notes of pineapple and nougat, there is also underlying grapefruit and lemon. The way these two opposing elements are entwined is nothing short of impressive.
There is a seamless integration of the elements. Though I must stress, it is not an overly fruity wine. In fact, its presentation is decidedly savoury with inherent oatmeal characters. And then there is the acidity, which is more like a supporting basket than a core. And the texture? Perfect.

It is a serious wine for purposeful drinking. It needs chilling, but not too much. Decanting? Most definitely. Time for quiet appreciation? A must. (Screwcap)

Savaterre Le Bon Vivant Rose 2015

New wine to the Savaterre range.
It tastes of Savaterre. And of Beechworth. It’s light-ish in colour but it’s full of flavour. Red and black cherries, game, raisins, cranberries and spice. It puts on a show. It hits, it cuts, it drives. There’s no lack of texture either. Character, it has plenty.

Thanks Campbell Mattinson
This is really quite delicious in my opinion.

Savaterre Frère Cadet 2015 Chardonnay

The younger (and delicious) brother of Savaterre’s estate chardonnay.
This is incredibly more-ish. It sits right in the sweet spot between out-and-out sophistication and pure juicy drinkability. It’s flashed with toast and honeysuckle and almonds but the mainstay flavours are more in the stonefruit, fennel and pear realms. It feels, tastes and finishes in beautiful fashion.
