You may have heard recently in the media that there is a NEW .AU domain name being released. This is true, there is a new one being released. For the next 7 days, you do have the option to pre-register and secure your .au domain name. On the 20th of September, if you have not claimed the new .au variant to your domain name, it will become publicly available.

What is this NEW .AU domain name and how does it look?

The current domain names that end in .au have multiple extensions. This includes com.au, net.au, org.au, asn.au, id.au, edu.au & gov.au. The new ones will end in just .au. For example, suncoasthosting.com.au is our current .au domain name. With the new .au domain name it is suncoasthosting.au.

Some people have already reached out to us and advised us that they would lose their existing .com.au or .net.au domain if they didn't do this. It is NOT TRUE. It is not a replacement for existing domains. au DA who are he domain authority for Australian domain's (.au domains) have said that you can register, renew and use existing domains past the 20th of September. They have no intentions currently of removing these extensions from the marketplace.

What happens with your existing .com.au, .net.au, .org.au etc domain?

The great news is that it remains registered. You will continue to be able to register, renew and use these domains as you do now. The domains will remain active past the 20th of September, 2022 and will be able to be renewed when they are due to expire.

What is the cost for the new .AU Domain names?

Currently you can register them for $49.95 for 1 year. The renewal options will likely change after the first year but given it is pre-registration they are currently only able to be registered for 1 year.
