Your SMSF has a 30 June deadline that catches trustees out every year.

If your fund does not have an active Electronic Service Address, your employer contributions may not land in time. The ATO treats late contributions as next year's, which can blow your concessional cap.

What to check this week:

1. ESA registered and active with your SMSF administrator

2. Fund bank account is NPP enabled for fast payments

3. Status shows Complying on Super Fund Lookup

Many Australians earning over $97k are paying the Medicare Levy Surcharge — and don't realise a basic private hospital policy could eliminate it entirely.

The surcharge adds 1% to 1.5% to your tax bill. For someone on $120,000, that's $1,500 a year — often similar to or more than the cost of hospital cover itself.

Worth checking before you lodge, especially if you had a pay rise this year.

The Budget changes have made super one of the most useful tax structures left for investors.

Concessional contributions sitting at 30,000 a year. Carry forward unused caps for up to five years. Income inside super taxed at 15 percent instead of your marginal rate.

For investors holding property or building wealth outside super, the maths is worth running every June.
