I couldn’t agree more with this and it is the part of my service that my families most value.
Attunement instead of attainment 🙏🏼
When I started my career as an NNEB it was all all about childCARE
Nursery NURSING.
The CARE and attention given to a newborn baby, the love and attention afforded an infant and child!
TIME taken as we gently changed a nappy on our knee.
The careful observation UNDERSTANDING and ATTUNEMENT to a child
Connection
Presence
Love
CARE ❤️
Fast forward several decades & sadly along the way, our shift for Early Years EDUCATION, is exactly that !
EDUCATION 😱😭
Or focus is now on ATTAINMENTs
instead of ATTUNEMENT
Attunement is when we connect to a child and recognise their individual needs.
‘When working well, attunement enables a child to feel truly understood, accepted and 'felt' by their caregiver.’ (1)
Did you know that The Curiosity Approach we are inspired the works & research of Emmi Pikler & place CARE giving moments as a priority!
Switching from our focus of educational practice to that of caregiving moments, slowing down and emphasising on the rhythm of the day. Turning mundane routines into meaningful rituals.
Stepping back from how many ‘activities’ we can plan, or next steps that can be met !
Let’s stop focusing on attainment, those standards reached, targets met and start focusing on attunement to each child!
How we connect, feel, see, hear and understand. To bring the childCARE back into EARLY YEARS 🙏🏼
‘Attunement instead of attainment’
Perhaps with a shift from Schoolification, education, standards and inspection reports we could focus our whole attention on BEING WITH a child, instead of on a treadmill of demonstration & proving how much we are educating them!
* If we attune - attainment is inevitable.
