I've been speaking to a lot of coaches recently, the similar thread from all of them is that they can't see another way forward. They cannot see the opportunity to combine growth through their current roles and success through exploring the private sector and running a consulting business.

My response has triggered a lot of thought, which is always good, some confusion which means I caused a disruption to their thought process and also some relief which is nice to see. I told them - "Have you considered that the best way forward might just be to start going backwards instead?"

All too often people look at a problem or task at hand, try to build a solution or plan to achieve it only to be hamstrung by speed bumps or sometimes epic roadblocks they never saw coming.

Reverse Engineering your task allows you to mitigate those speed bumps and avoid the roadblocks altogether because you've already seen them coming a mile away and have contingencies planned. This is not only an effective way to plan for your athletes and their development, it's an excellent, tried and true method for achieving success in business.

S&C Coaches - get in touch and let's get started.

Coaching – A New Perspective⁣

So you’ve dreamed of working in sport all your life, you complete a bachelors degree, then begin to complete your Strength & Conditioning levels which all require significant coaching hours to progress, then you complete a basters degree – so now employment in your ideal job working with elite athletes should be a given right?⁣

One one side, yes, you can definitely get some work with sub-elite to elite athletes and semi-professional or professional environments. What you’re not told at all during your academic pursuits is that the vast majority of those coaching hours, where you are giving your expertise to athletes and organisations over considerable hours, will be for FREE or below minimum wage. Yes, you absolutely hone your skills as a coach and gain experience, but when you are satisfying a role which is mandated to have a minimum pay rate – why should you not receive financial remuneration like every other profession?⁣

The road to fixing this systemic marginalisation and exploitation of our industry coaches like us is a long one, and one which we may not see the end of in our careers. What we can do is create a disruption in this process, not refusing to work, but to work smarter and running a small consulting business along side roles which further your career in professional sport. The hours will be long, yes, but when you can make a solid income to prop you up in your current volunteer / honorarium / or low paying role until things change or until you get your ticket to the big show – why wouldn’t you explore that avenue?⁣

Pivot, adapt, succeed.

Building trust with your athletes is more important than anything else when it comes to getting the best performance outcomes and leveraging an athlete base for your coaching business.

Spend the time and cultivate that relationship and build the foundation as it will pay dividends in the long term for the athlete and for you as their coach.

Becoming a fitness professional (personal trainer) takes 8 weeks most of the time, and without much else experience you can charge $100 per hour just because you have that title.

An S&C Coach spends years coaching to attain their ASCA Levels, then more time to gain PCAS Designations, most likely have spent 3 years doing a Bachelors Degree and a good portion also do a Masters.

Yet...

When it comes to quantifying their value, truly recognising what this mass of education and practical experience means - most wouldn’t have the confidence to charge anywhere near that.

Think on it.

Unfortunately, most places you look within Strength & Conditioning are underpaying their staff. A lot of ‘blame game’ justifications usually accompany this situation - no funding, no budget etc.⁣

So as a professional coach you have a choice to make:⁣

🅰️ Do I struggle through financially and still give my all in the hope it’ll get better?⁣

🅱️ Do I explore my own path as well and continues to develop as a coach to secure my financial situation?⁣

Don’t fool yourself, both take effort and diligence, but one in particular will give you options and possibilities where at first you thought there were none but the status quo. ⁣

Too often I see highly qualified strength and conditioning settle for the status quo relating to fair payments / salaries rather than challenge it.

The more coaches who recognise and OWN their value as a professional and an expert in their field, the sooner things will change.

RECOGNISE YOUR VALUE.
