At Outback Stores we provide retail services to remote stores on behalf of Indigenous communities.

Come take a look at how we are making a positive difference in the health, employment and economy of remote Indigenous communities. Outback Stores is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO Code 70040) offering nationally recognised qualifications in retail services. We offer Certificate I, II, III and IV in Retail to all eligible store staff and store managers.

Our trainer Naomi recently visited the Beswick community to deliver the Certificate I in Retail Services to local students.

Through hands-on learning, students built valuable skills in customer service and communication, bringing these to life through fun and interactive role-play activities.

These real-world learning experiences highlight the impact of VET in Schools—helping students build confidence, develop practical skills, and create pathways to meaningful employment and future career opportunities in retail.

What an incredible weekend at the Barunga Festival 2026!

Outback Stores was proud to be part of the biggest Barunga Festival in its 41-year history, supporting the community as thousands of visitors came together to celebrate First Nations culture, music, art, sport and community on Bagala Country.

A special thank you to our amazing Outback Stores team, whose hard work, enthusiasm and commitment helped make the weekend such a success. Whether serving customers, preparing food, making coffees or supporting operations behind the scenes, their efforts ensured festival-goers were well looked after throughout the event.

Over the three-day festival, our team achieved some impressive results:
☕ 736 barista-made coffees served
🥓 730 bacon and egg rolls served
🍔 515 steak burgers and sausage rolls sold
💧 More than 2,150 bottles of Mount Franklin and Pump water sold

Congratulations and thanks to the Barunga community and the Bagala Aboriginal Corporation on delivering such a successful festival. We are proud to have played a small part in this historic event.

Planning is already underway for Barunga Festival 2027, and we look forward to continuing our support as the festival grows bigger and better each year.

Recently, we had the pleasure of celebrating team member Lisa from the Dungalan Store, who has successfully completed her Certificate IV in Retail Management. 🎉

Store Manager Brad presented Lisa with her certificate and a cake to recognise her hard work, dedication and commitment to developing her retail leadership skills - Congratulations Lisa!

It’s also wonderful to see Lisa’s daughter, Mahalia, beginning her own journey by undertaking a Certificate I in Retail at Jilkminggan School through our VET in Schools program - following in her mum’s footsteps and building valuable skills for the future.

A huge milestone for the Daly River community!

Following one of the most significant flood events the region has experienced, the Nauiyu community store officially reopened on Wednesday, 27 May - marking an important milestone in the Daly River community’s recovery and return home.

After severe flooding inundated homes, infrastructure and the community store in March, Outback Stores worked alongside contractors and partners to fast-track extensive refurbishment works, ensuring the store was ready ahead of residents returning to community this week.

A special thank you to Tom Gauden and the team at Across Country Construction, who completed what would normally be an eight-week building program in just 30 days.

It was wonderful to see community members walk through the doors of their newly refurbished store for the first time since March.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this possible.

Recently, our Health & Nutrition Manager, Anna, and Nutritionist, Bridget, travelled to Hobart for the Preventive Health Conference held by the Public Health Association of Australia.

Bridget presented on the success of our sugar reduction initiatives lead by local remote Indigenous store owners in Outback Stores managed locations.

It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase what we do and how we collaborate with communities to implement these initiatives and support positive health outcomes. A key highlight was sharing how one store reduced sugar by 1.5 tonnes in a year through in-store merchandising strategies.

Thank you to the Public Health Association of Australia for hosting such a valuable and engaging conference.

Meet Martina! Our Good Food Person from Bardi Ardyaloon Store in the beautiful Dampier Peninsula, WA.

As part of our new Good Food People Program, a government funded initiative supporting local nutrition leadership in remote communities, Martina is one of our trainees helping lead the way in creating healthier store environments.

We caught up with Martina to hear how she’s been finding the program so far:
🍎 How long have you worked at the store: Four years
🍊 Favourite thing about the program so far: Completing produce quality checks each morning, as well as talking with customers and helping them make healthier choices in store!
🍉 Favourite thing to do outside of work: Head down to Jologo beach with family, enjoy the country and go fishing!

Martina is doing outstanding work supporting the store’s fruit and vegetable department and contributing to providing fresh, healthy food to her community. It’s been wonderful to see her confidence grow, and she is doing an excellent job. We are excited to see her continue to thrive in the role.

Proud to be a part of the Good Food People Program 💚

This program builds nutrition knowledge and practical store skills with local Indigenous team members in remote communities.

During their 10 week placement, these Monash University nutrition students helped adapt resources to support our Nutrition team in training the Good Food People — making healthier choices easier at a store and community level.

We are excited to see the Good Food People Program getting underway! 🥕🍎

This new government-funded initiative is focused on building local nutrition leadership in remote communities, supporting the recruitment and training of local Indigenous team members to become their store’s “Good Food Person.”

As part of the Federal Government’s commitment to Closing the Gap, the program has launched across ten remote community stores, with team members working alongside their Store Managers and supported by our Nutrition and Operations teams.

Through practical training in the fruit and vegetable department, and nutrition training with our Nutritionist, the Good Food team members are building their skills in core nutrition principles and helping create healthier store environments for their communities.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll introduce you to our 10 Good Food People trainees who are already doing fantastic work in their stores and leading the way in supporting healthier choices for their communities. 💚
