Proud to be a part of the Good Food People Program 💚

This program builds nutrition knowledge and practical store skills with local Indigenous team members in remote communities.

During their 10 week placement, these Monash University nutrition students helped adapt resources to support our Nutrition team in training the Good Food People — making healthier choices easier at a store and community level.

Enjoy this snapshot of the students’ placement highlights!

We are excited to see the Good Food People Program getting underway! 🥕🍎

This new government-funded initiative is focused on building local nutrition leadership in remote communities, supporting the recruitment and training of local Indigenous team members to become their store’s “Good Food Person.”

As part of the Federal Government’s commitment to Closing the Gap, the program has launched across ten remote community stores, with team members working alongside their Store Managers and supported by our Nutrition and Operations teams.

Through practical training in the fruit and vegetable department, and nutrition training with our Nutritionist, the Good Food team members are building their skills in core nutrition principles and helping create healthier store environments for their communities.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll introduce you to our 10 Good Food People trainees who are already doing fantastic work in their stores and leading the way in supporting healthier choices for their communities. 💚

Despite the challenges of distance and recent weather events, our trainers continue to show up for our learners.

Lee-Anne, based more than 1,000km away, is currently completing her Certificate II in Retail Services units with our Training Officer Naomi, through virtual sessions.

These sessions play a vital role in keeping learning on track - ensuring continuity, connection, and strong real in-store training outcomes, no matter the distance.

🌟 Store Manager Spotlight 🌟

This quarter, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on Swetha and Narendra from our Kintore Store.
Swetha and Narendra consistently demonstrate strong operational standards, paired with a genuine “can do” attitude. No matter the challenge, they go above and beyond to support not only their own store, but communities across the broader Outback Stores network.

Through the busy wet season and important ceremony periods, their dedication, adaptability, and teamwork truly stand out.

Their community-led retail expertise and solutions-focused mindset set a strong benchmark across the region - and we’re incredibly grateful for the impact they continue to make every day.

Awesome work, Swetha & Narendra 👏

Big thanks to our pilots and freight transport partners!
More than half the communities we support are currently cut off by road due to extreme weather. Thanks to these dedicated teams, supplies are still getting through.
We’re thinking of everyone during these challenging times. 💛

This month, we proudly celebrate Brian and Janine Wilson, who mark 10 years of supporting, uplifting, and strengthening our remote community stores.

Married for 38 years, Brian and Janine took a leap into remote life a decade ago - and have never looked back. Since then, they’ve managed more than 31 stores across remote Australia, working across both permanent locations and within our relief team.

Their commitment, professionalism, and genuine passion for community shine through in everything they do. Along the way, they’ve built strong connections, experienced diverse cultures, and made lifelong friends.

“We’ve met amazing people and had experiences we’ll never forget.”

Thank you, Brian and Janine, for your outstanding contribution and the care you bring to our business every day.

👏 Congratulations on this incredible milestone!

Over the past five years, Outback Stores and Monash University have built an amazing partnership. This has given Nutrition students the chance to learn about remote food systems, food security and store nutrition – all while making a real difference to health outcomes within Outback Stores. It has even led to career opportunities, with previous students coming to work with us!

Earlier this month, the Monash Nutrition & Dietetics team visited our Darwin support office for a great day of conversation and idea sharing. Some topic highlights included Outback Stores’ nutrition programs, the university’s incredible work organising student placements, and how we can work together to support students interested in public health. Students also actively joined in with their ideas.

This visit gave Monash a sneak peek into the students’ current project, helping streamline our new Good Food People program – an exciting new initiative focused on building local team members’ skills to support healthier choices in store.

A big thank you to Monash University for their ongoing support - we’re excited to keep growing this partnership and welcoming more students to the Territory!
