The Unity in Design story

NDIS, SDA & Disability Design. Unity in Design provide architectural designs that are innately practical & easily compliant for Improved Liveability, Fully Accessible, Robust, High Physical Support for all levels of the Specialist Disability Accommodation & National Disability Insurance Schemes. Unity in Design is a recent subsidiary to Formspace Building Design. Unity in Design begins with the desire and passion to do better.… to do better for Australians living with a disability. The ‘design to build market’ has a gratuitous need to deliver above considered industry standards to provide a level of design that knowingly, is transforaminal for participants. For too long this has been undervalued. Unity in Design has been recognised as the exemplar for a new type of rationale for disability led design and the impacts these designs have on local community, mainstream integration and broader wellbeing/social fabric.

Unity In Design (by Formspace) are also proud to be one of the first Registered Providers for the NDIS in Queensland for building design. Our meaningful approach, is a response to what can be achieved with progressive foresight and a collaboration that is vested to innovate for a clear manifestation of a participant lead program. Unity In Design seamlessly integrate the design typologies, regardless of disability that provide a strong uplift on equality.

✍️ While Formspace (well… me) predominantly focuses on disability and residential building design, I also design across a broad range of building classifications and project types, including commercial, industrial and apartment work, across Australia.

Here’s a recent example of a medium impact industrial workshop in Brisbane, with varying layers of complexity due to zoning requirements. I really enjoy the variety and problem solving this sector brings.

I genuinely appreciate the businesses that support and back me in designing challenging projects, and in return I always try to put my best foot forward across every project and design discipline.

✏️ A recently designed resort style estate, designed in the Gold Coast Hinterland. It’s a big and confident estate home with strong symmetry for a deliberate arrival + rear entertaining.

The Arrival / presence: The gatehouse + porte cochere + reflection ponds create a proper sense of ceremony and “wow” the moment you enter. It reads expansive and intentional with direct views to the back of the home, with the living areas spilling over to the outdoor space.

The rear acts like a private resort with a lap pool that features a baja shelf inspired bunny pad + spa + sunken fire pit + outdoor living wings with views over a drop edge pool and beyond.

All the small details, from caravan parking, pizza oven and wellness sauna, all here in this home.

One of my personal favorites from 2025, a Mediterranean-inspired knockdown rebuild in Burleigh.

The facade is anchored by a hand-applied clay render, softly textured, yet imperfect.. in the best way. Its warm, mineral tones catch the light differently throughout the day, giving the curved forms a sense of depth and age, areas of design that you see through Morocco and the alike.

Paired with layered planting and gentle arches, the finish brings a grounded, coastal warmth that feels timeless rather than styled.

“CURVAS” Brand new Mediterranean-inspired display home opening in 2026.

Set on a prominent corner of Nerang Road in Southport, this home is all about texture and form… natural stone, soft clay Venetian render, sculpted curves and warm finishes that take cues from classic North African Mediterranean coastal design.

North African design, especially in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and parts of Egypt, is historically dominated by lime and clay-based renders. Those soft, earthen finishes (tadelakt in Morocco, for example) are exactly the clay/lime plasters polished or burnished to create depth, warmth and subtle movement in light.

Two new Mediterranean expressions taking shape in Brisbane, open to the public, I assume, soon.
These designs draw from years of wandering old Mediterranean villages, touching stone walls warmed by sun, watching how light bends through an archway in late afternoon. Not something pulled from Pinterest, but lived, walked, breathed, experiences that shaped my Mediterranean design understanding.
The Med teaches that buildings don’t just home life, they hold it. They soften, age gracefully, invite connection.
Seeing these built reminds me why I design.
Even after a year that tested patience, faith in people and the industry…. and at times my own footing, creation remains steady. The work still comes from experience, not imitation.
I’m shutting down shortly to reset, restore and breathe for the first time in what feels like a long while. Thank you to those who supported me this year, I’ll see you fresh in 2026.

🌄 I don’t often share completed homes, but I wanted to take a moment to show this beauty. It’s a proud collaboration with Lucky & Simon Opulent Living, and a testament to the care and detail that goes into our design and build process.
This Coastal Hamptons home at Peregian Beach came together beautifully. The precision of the gables, each with identical setouts, brings visual acuity to the facade, while the steeper 30° deep pan roofing adds both depth and presence. White wider spaced trims paired with the fresh green door give the home a coastal lift, setting it apart from more traditional Hampton expressions/vibes.
I want to also really extend my thanks to Lucky and Simon, this home come up really quite pretty and well easy on the eye. It'll age well as the greenery and trees set in.

🌱 With the arrival of Spring, here are a few projects from the past months. In reflection, the softer coastal Mediterranean style is still strong on the Gold Coast, with several knockdown rebuilds and canal homes in Burleigh (testing my ability to design curves and arches with visual acuity). Barndo-inspired homes too, including a higher-spec new build in Sanctuary Cove for Stage Projects. Further west in Warwick, a new acreage design with a particular emphasis on modern country flare.

Plus, of course, new disability SDA homes and NDIS developments. A project in particular, an inner-Brisbane knockdown rebuild, for a great client living with disability and his partner. I’m grateful for their trust in shaping a home that balances accessibility, site outcomes, and budget. Really enjoyed working with them both.

Overall whilst different outcomes in design, it is ultimately the same approach: homes that feel good to be in, that hold light and breeze well, buildable, but have s*x and sizzle that support the way people actually live.

Quietly humble at witnessing a few NDIS SDA projects starting to take shape across Australia this month.

It’s always a warm feeling watching the first signs of progress on-site, particularly regarding disability homes. A reminder of why this work matters.

These developments aren’t just builds, they’re designed to support real people, with real needs, to live with more freedom, safety, and dignity.

NDIS Robust SDA 4-pack development—designed with heart, purpose, and the highest standards of design. In the NDIS SDA space, "Robust" means homes built for participants with complex needs, ensuring durability, safety, and a calming environment. Too often, Robust designs focus only on margin, overlooking the importance of comfort, dignity, and quality of life. I believe strength and beauty can coexist and is an important message I share through these designs. Through thoughtful design, my intention is to create spaces that empower participants, offering not just security but also warmth, independence, and a true sense of home. Every person deserves a space where they feel safe, supported, and valued. Reminded no more than the recent Cyclone event in SEQ. This is why design matters and to a great extent, is why I do, what I do. Trying to support our communities most vulnerable.

❤️ One of Australia’s finest disability SDA apartments, designed for accessibility and inclusivity, a considered community. Bringing the signature design-led approach to one of Adelaide’s premier beachfront suburbs, Port Adelaide.

The mindfully designed floor plates feature 8 high physical support residences, each created to enable individuals with disabilities to live with dignity and independence. Every detail reflects my passion for inclusive design and my commitment to making a positive difference in people’s lives. For me, development, isn’t just about buildings; it’s about producing individual spaces where participants feel; supported, valued, a comment that must be reflected in the building design.
Key consultation in deliverables is the nectar that allows a more mindful approach to designing, these include collaborating with participants and industry experts to extract the meaningful design-based outcomes participants seek, to create ultimately a home to live their BEST lives.

I cannot undervalue though the challenges that go into designing developments of this nature, including that of local planning, NDIS SDA and AS1428 requirements.

🙏 Over the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of designing some incredible spaces—each one unique, a reflection of those that engage Formspace. It all starts from that one idea...

I have designed large-scale disability developments, that has sent me across this country, with the push and drive to support our communities most vulnerable.

I have also designed modern bespoke spaces that push the boundaries of form and space. From emerging trends like arches to soft curves, these designs reflect more than just building design—they personify the lives that will call these spaces, home.

Balancing creativity with the inevitable pressure has been a challenge, at times, but seeing these visions come to life, is the moment, for me. I extend my gratitude to all whom have engaged and trusted me in providing industry pioneering design services.
