Sometimes when my kids ask me what I do for work, they look blank when I say I write stories.

This week, I think the penny finally dropped when we were in Woolworths and I told my son to flip open a magazine on the shelf. There we were, the Noble clan, on page 5. He had a smile from ear to ear.

My latest piece is about moving from the city to the country, and all the incredible people in our lives who made that transition so much easier.

Growing up, my mum would pull me out of school for anywhere from two weeks to two months and off we’d go on an adventure.

When I was 14, we road-tripped around Mexico checking out ancient Mayan ruins in an old rental. When I tried to explain what a Mexican Mole Poblano (a chocolate chicken dish) tasted like to my high school friends back home in Australia, they didn’t get it. Nor could they picture the grandness of the giant sequoias we saw at Yosemite National Park in the US.

I can still close my eyes, now that I’m 38, and remember what it was like to float weightlessly in the Dead Sea in Israel. I can feel the spray of the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe on my face and I can taste the lemongrass, lime leaves and galangal flavours courtesy of my first bowl of tom yam soup in Thailand.

That's what I want for my kids.

My family spends most of our extra money traveling, not on things like private school. Trip experiences provide a good education for my kids.

It was the early hours of the morning when my mother woke to a strange sound. I was four at the time and my bed was in the far end of her room. As she blinked in the morning light, she realised with horror what the noise was. Choking.
