Always nice to hear positive feedback! ๐ŸŽ

A massive THANK YOU to Carley at CreAg Services for recently testing both my hay and soil.

These results really help me to know exactly what the mares are eating and plan the feed and minerals they will need to meet the energy, growth and nutritional requirements of the foals when they are born.

Did you know?

Once the mare has foaled she will produce around 3-3.5% if her body weight in milk per day and her energy requirements will increase by up to 80%.

โ˜˜๏ธ Spring is coming โ˜˜๏ธ

Sub-Soil temp has risen in Sale by 1 degrees in the last 7 days: from 10 degrees Celsius to 11 degrees Celsius

This particular paddock is waiting to reach 16 degrees- A minimal temp to sow Millet for Summer forage ๐ŸŒพ

Checking your soil temp will help reduce the risk of crop failure caused by undesirable ground conditions- every crop will have their optimal germination temperature ๐Ÿค’

Have you checked your sub-soil temp today?

Covers @ Ben Bullen ๐Ÿฎ

Below is a clients paddock that was over sown to a multi-species cover crop from Notmans Seeds (Sourced from Elders Maffra)

The paddock is very light (Sandy) in texture and has been utilised as a feed pad for beef cattle during the past years of drought.

The main idea behind the cover crop was to replenish some nutrients naturally back into the soil; such as Nitrogen, through the use of Peas and a variety of Clovers, whilst also providing a diverse range of ground cover. The ultimate goal for the paddock is to restore and rebuild the soil health after what has been a tough past few years regarding moisture availability โ˜€๏ธ

The cover was sown relatively late (Early May) and received a torrential downpour in Early in June, so it is good to see that the plants are still and healthy and the paddock is looking good for some crazy spring feed! โ˜˜๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿ” Feed Testing & Dry Matter Digestibility ๐Ÿ”

Have you ever fed bales of Hay/ Silage with adequate levels of crude protein & energy recorded in the feed test analysis; however you noticed that the stock didnโ€™t perform well on it?

This could have boiled down to low levels of Dry Matter Digestibility (DMD) within the feed source.

DMD is often a factor that is overlooked within a feed test; although it is just as important as protein, fibre and energy levels.

Ensuring that your winter feed source has adequate nutrient levels, including DMD can help increase live weight gains and reduce the risk of your stock going backwards over the winter period โ„๏ธ

If you have any further questions in regards to DMD or are interested in a feed test for your winter fodder, donโ€™t hesitate to contact us ๐Ÿฎ

Kikuyu & Uncle Tobys!

This paddock has dominant summer growth of Kikuyu grass to maintain beef stock over the warmer months.

Kikuyu is a hardy summer forage, however it dies off within the first frosts... creating a perfect enviroment to over-sow with a winter annual; in this case- Saia Oats.

Saia Oats then provide a fast devoping winter forage source which can be utilised for hay & silage in conjunction with grazing.

When the warmer months rear closer, the kikuyu grass will take off again, no spraying required ๐Ÿš€

This specific paddock was sown at 60kg/ha of Saia Oats; no fertiliser use up to date.

Updates to come!

Who else loves Autumn sowing ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ

The paddock below has recently had 2t/ha of lime to match the calcium deficiencies shown in the soil test.
As of this week it was sown to a winter cover mix to provide some nutrient diversity for both stock and soil ๐Ÿƒ
