Deanside Primary School's Field of Play was designed and built to handle everything a school throws at it: PE classes, lunchtime games, and weekend community use, all year round.

The field was one of several SPORTENG assessed and supported as part of ongoing work with the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA), with the brief to ensure the field could sustain the school's forecast use through every season.

An agronomic investigation found the existing growing medium had high silt and clay content and low hydraulic conductivity, resulting in poor drainage. SPORTENG recommended a staged improvement plan over three years, combining imported sand and additional drainage to improve the soil profile.

SPORTENG was also engaged to assist the school with witness and hold point inspections throughout the project, as maintaining quality control of imported sand is critical to a project's success.

Ongoing maintenance remains key to ensuring the field stays at a high quality for years to come.

Today is a bittersweet day as we say farewell to Chenise Penrose.

Next month she’s off to a new challenge with Queensland Rugby, and while we’re genuinely excited for her, she’ll be missed.

As Project Support Officer in our Brisbane team, Chenise kept projects like Rockhampton running smoothly, the kind of steady, behind the scenes work that keeps everything else on track.

Thank you, Chenise, for everything you’ve brought to the team.
We’re looking forward to seeing what you do next!

How long should a school field really last?

Designed and built right, a Field of Play can carry PE classes, lunchtime games and weekend sport through years of Melbourne winters and summers without missing a beat.

Getting there comes down to five things: understanding the climate, agronomy, engineered design, good construction practices, and a maintenance plan

We've been working with the Victorian School Building Authority across a number of Victorian schools, with our National Field of Play Team Lead Lucas Skelton leading the assessments, to help schools get all five right and keep their fields performing for students year after year.

Which of the five do you think matters most once the ribbon's cut?

A school's playing fields shape just as much learning as its classrooms. The oval, the court, the running track: that's where kids move, compete and grow.

This September we're attending the National Education Summit in Melbourne.
It's Victoria's largest K-12 event, and we'll be there for the part that happens outside the classroom: the sports grounds, courts and Fields of Play that schools rely on every day.

Designing them well is its own challenge. A school surface has to handle PE, lunchtime, weekend sport and community hire, stay safe in all weather, and last for decades on a tight budget. That's exactly the kind of problem we love.

Come find us across both days. Whether you're planning a new facility, upgrading a tired oval, or just want to talk through what's possible, we'd love to chat.

A former quarry in Sydney's north is being reshaped into a place for the community to play.

Our NSW team, led by project manager Maria Guerreiro, recently delivered the detailed design and is currently undertaking construction phase assistance for the natural turf multi-use field within the Hornsby Quarry development.

Located on the side of embankment, it is the centerpiece of old man valley. The field will allow multiple rectangular sports to be played, while also providing a passive green area for recreational use.

The broader precinct includes significant landscaping enhancements, amenities building, bmx and pump track .

From quarry to community, a space where people can play organised sport, ride, or simply spend time outdoors. Follow along as the project develops.

We’re excited to share that our team has officially commenced work on the Field of Play project for Hornsby Shire Council. Located in Old Mans Valley within the Hornsby Park precinct, the Field of Play project is part of the long-term transformation of the former Hornsby quarry. Once complete, the...

A few weeks ago, the Brisbane team headed to Suncorp Stadium for the Broncos v Titans, a proper Queensland derby.

For Mardi and Jordan, who moved to Brisbane a few months back, it was even their first time attending a live rugby league game.

A few of us had a keen eye on the surface performance during the game, and how it handled a portable stage rolled onto the field at halftime

Turns out a night off is still a chance to watch a field in action! 🏉

Big news, and it's one of our own! 👏
Congratulations to our Undergraduate Turfgrass Agronomist , named one of just eleven 2026 Royal and Ancient Golf Club Scholars worldwide, and representing Australia in this year's cohort.

Chosen through a highly competitive international process, Luca earned his place for his work in agronomy and sustainability. Before joining us, he spent more than three years greenkeeping across Melbourne's famed Sandbelt, and he brings that knowledge to our Field of Play work every day.

The recognition is well earned, as Luca already brings a rare level of commitment to the sector, juggling dual studies in Environmental Engineering and Sports Turf alongside dual roles at SPORTENG and Metropolitan Golf Club.
But what truly sets him apart is how he sees the work. To Luca, a golf course isn't just somewhere to play, it's an ecological and community asset, one to be managed for water conservation, smarter chemical use, and the return of native flora and fauna.

The scholarship will see Luca mentored by a Member of the R&A and join a global network of scholars, capped by a leadership conference in St Andrews later this year.

Congratulations, Luca, on this well-earned recognition. We couldn't be prouder!

A new flagship sports and entertainment precinct is taking shape in Gippsland.

The Gippsland Sports and Entertainment Precinct (GSEP) and Morwell Gun Club redevelopment is one of Latrobe City Council's most significant infrastructure projects, and it's under construction right now.

We provided the detailed design and documentation for the redevelopment of the two natural turf rectangular fields and one new synthetic field, working alongside Brand Architects to bring the vision to life.

For a region like Gippsland, this is more than a set of pitches. It's the capacity to host significant events, support community health, and back regional growth for years to come.

Kudos to our Project Lead and Project Manager for steering our work on the ground and making the delivery of this project possible 👏

And follow us for more updates!

Last week, our SPORTENG team headed to the ASTMA Conference in Melbourne. It's one of the best chances we get to reconnect with clients and meet new faces across the industry.

Our Senior Turf Agronomist, John Neylan, took to the stage a couple of times, sharing his expertise in sports turf agronomy and sports field maintenance.

Beyond the sessions, it was the conversations that made it: swapping ideas on field design and materials and picking up the kind of insights that sharpen how we design and build. It was also a valuable few days of professional development for the team, a chance to learn from across the industry and bring fresh thinking back to the work we do. Always time well spent!

Got a project that could use turf agronomy expertise? We'd love to talk. Reach out to the team anytime.
