Counterfeit Notes Circulating – Businesses Urged to Stay Alert

The Braidwood & Villages Business Chamber is encouraging local businesses to remain vigilant following reports of counterfeit notes circulating across the region.

Over recent months, there appears to have been an increase in counterfeit notes being passed through businesses, particularly $50 notes, with some reports suggesting they may be moving up through the South Coast and surrounding areas.

While many counterfeit notes can look convincing at first glance, there are several simple checks business owners and staff can make before accepting cash.

The Reserve Bank of Australia recommends checking key security features such as the clear window, the feel of the polymer note, the rolling colour effect, microprint, the flying bird feature, the reversing number and raised print.

If you suspect a note may be counterfeit, you have the right to refuse it. Do not accept the note if you are unsure.

If a suspected counterfeit note has already been accepted, the RBA advises businesses to handle it as little as possible, place it in an envelope, record as much information as possible about where and when it was received, and report it to police.

It is important for businesses to understand that counterfeit notes have no value. If a note is confirmed to be counterfeit, you will not be reimbursed.

This is a timely reminder to ensure all staff, especially younger or casual staff who may not handle cash regularly, are shown how to check notes properly.

A few extra seconds at the till can save a business from unnecessary loss.

Braidwood & Villages Business Chamber Meets with Senator David Pocock

Last week, members of the Braidwood & Villages Business Chamber met with Senator David Pocock to discuss the importance of securing stronger federal support for a corridor-level assessment of the Kings Highway.

This is an important issue for Braidwood, our surrounding villages, and the wider region.

The Kings Highway is the spine of our regional economy. It brings visitors to our town, supports local businesses, enables freight movement, and connects our community to Canberra and the South Coast.

However, the long-standing safety issues, closures, congestion, and pressure through Wallace Street continue to impact local traders, residents, emergency access, freight reliability, and the overall visitor experience.

The Chamber is advocating for Infrastructure Australia to undertake a corridor-level assessment of the Kings Highway.

This would provide the independent evidence base needed to properly assess long-term solutions, including:

• Congestion through Braidwood
• Pressure on Wallace Street
• Safer and more reliable visitor and freight access
• Better long-term infrastructure planning
• Stronger economic resilience for local businesses
• Recognition of the Kings Highway as a cross-border route of regional and national importance

We are pleased to see constructive engagement from our federal representatives.

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Minister Kristy McBain, has met with Chamber representatives and has made a formal request to Infrastructure Australia seeking advice on the most appropriate way to progress a corridor-level review.

Senator Katie Gallagher and Senator David Pocock have also expressed support for the initiative and indicated a willingness to work with Minister McBain’s office to help reinforce the referral.

This alignment across ACT and NSW representatives is a positive step forward.

It recognises that the Kings Highway is more than a local road — it is a critical cross-border asset that supports tourism, freight, regional business, emergency access, and community connection.

For Braidwood, this work is about more than road upgrades.

It is about better planning for our town centre, improving liveability, supporting local businesses, and ensuring future decisions are coordinated rather than piecemeal.

The Chamber will continue to work with all relevant offices and keep members updated as this important advocacy progresses.
