With the cost of living going up, a good salary is increasing in importance when it comes to choosing a new role or being motivated by an existing one. However, when you look deeper as to what makes people stay in a role it is far more nuanced.

For the first five years of my business in Australia, I specialised in career coaching. This gave me the opportunity to understand why people left their roles and what lead them to change career. Some of the common motivators were as follows:

✅ Shared values with the company
✅ Clear goals and direction
✅ A role that plays to their strengths — and actually uses them
✅ A sense of control or autonomy
✅ Belonging in the culture and team
✅ Being listened to, recognised and appreciated
✅ Opportunities to grow, stretch and be challenged

Whilst these are general motivators, each person prioritises these differently. For one person growth and challenge might be more important than stability. For someone else, they may be driven by autonomy. This is why getting to know your team members is so important. When your team members feel listened to and understood they are more likely to stay and grow with your company.

There’s this idea that building a business—or leading a team—means going it alone. That real success comes from working harder, longer, and doing it all yourself.

But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

What I love most about working in Brisbane is the deep sense of community.

So if you’ve been stuck in that solo mindset lately, maybe it’s time to reach out.

Have a coffee with another local leader. Ask someone how they’re doing (and mean it). Or pop into a workshop and get inspired.

You don’t have to do this alone.

So many leaders think communication issues are a team problem. “They’re not listening,” “They don’t get it,” “Why aren’t they on the same page?”

But here’s what we often don’t expect—sometimes, the confusion starts with us. And once we see it, we can fix it.

One of my clients said it best: “I finally see why the team were confused. It was because I was giving mixed messages.” That moment of self-awareness? Total game changer. They shifted how they communicated, and within weeks, the team dynamic improved. Fewer misunderstandings. More accountability. Less tension.

Self-awareness isn’t fluffy—it’s foundational. Especially when you’re leading others. The fluffy stuff is often the thing that leads to outcomes and results.

So if you’re feeling stuck with team tension or misalignment, try this: reflect on what you think you’re saying vs. what’s actually being heard. Notice your tone when things get stressful.

Because when you change the way you show up, everything around you starts to shift too. 🌱

That’s the quiet power of self-awareness. It leads the way—even when you’re not sure where to start.

People often think that once they’ve nailed the perfect plan—mapped out goals, fine-tuned their offer, locked in a solid strategy—they’re set.

But that’s not how it really works. You can have the best roadmap in the world, and still feel stuck. Still second-guess yourself. Still wonder why things just aren’t flowing.

Here’s what I’ve seen time and time again: it’s not about learning more. It’s about understanding yourself more. Your mindset, your patterns, your drivers—when those click into place, everything else starts to shift too.

Real leadership growth? It’s an inside job before it ever shows up on the outside.

Start by getting curious. Notice what fires you up and what shuts you down. Catch those sneaky thoughts that keep you small. Reflect on what success really means for you—not what Instagram says it should look like. And don’t be afraid to ask for support from someone who can help hold up the mirror when you need it most.

Because the truth is, when your inner game is strong, your strategy doesn’t just work—it flows.

And that’s where the real momentum begins. 🚀
