🔎 Case study focus

We were engaged by an Australian oil and gas exploration and production company to provide strategic contracts and procurement assistance for an upcoming coal seam gas project.

Our highly experienced consultants developed and implemented numerous processes and policy improvements to encompass compliances to pre- and post-award polices and standards. Further strategy development took place to build whole project contract strategies, drilling and completion strategies and warehouse and inventory progress. Rowe Advisory consultants also created successful tenders in areas such as engineering, drilling rigs and wellsite services.

The team delivered over 75 contracts in 12 months with significant savings achieved. In addition to delivery and savings, the outsourced C&P function worked with the employees to change the attitude and culture of the organisation towards C&P by establishing it as a value-adding function.

Upon completion of the first phase of this work, Rowe Advisory were further engaged by the client to provide fully outsourced contracts and procurement support.

Rowe Advisory UK was approached by an oil and gas operator to review their C&P operating model and recommend actions to manage risk and ensure compliance. Concerns were lack of vendor due diligence, unclear C&P procedures and only one sourcing process regardless of risk and value.

Our consultant undertook the study remotely, reviewing people, processes, systems and tools to identify risks and gaps in procedures. Interviews were conducted with stakeholders and interim feedback from the key stakeholder ensured clarity and focus on the prioritised areas in the final report.

Our consultant challenged the status quo to identify the risks and outline the opportunities for change which included:

*Recommendations on supplier due diligence.

*Risk and value based approach to pre and post contract award.

*Definition of C&P roles and responsibilities.

*Improved contract planning and definition of requirements.

*Improved pre-award approvals process and post-award contract management.

A comprehensive and concise report identifying gaps, risks and recommendations was delivered. The report focused on adding value within the context of the client’s culture, organisation, existing suite of contract requirements and budget.

We were engaged by the client, a mining company, who required assistance to review their current way of working and develop a cost reduction plan covering both systems and processes. Changes within the leadership team and a short project timeline added to the challenge.

❓What makes a great client?

🤝 The relationship between client and supplier is key to successful business. Based on her 30 years of experience, our CEO Jody Rowe, identifies her top five tips for good client/supplier relationships:

🗣️ Communicate, communicate, communicate – be sure to return phone calls, respond to emails and turn up to meetings. Good suppliers have a choice, and good clients are the goal.

⏱️ Take time to understand each other’s point of view – business is a two-way street.

✊ Respect your workforce – in some instances up to 90% of the workforce are contractors and the pool is shrinking.

😇 Have integrity and deal with your suppliers openly and honestly – in other words don’t poach and smile!

🙌 Running small businesses can be tough and deep market knowledge is key. Small entrepreneurial businesses are the creators – they are the backbone of Australia. And we don’t want to lose them!
