It doesn't.

Good value engineering is about asking better questions.

Can this achieve the same outcome with a more efficient solution?

Can a different material improve durability without increasing cost?

Can the design be simplified to reduce construction time while maintaining quality?

Can we eliminate unnecessary complexity without compromising the client's vision?

The objective isn't to spend less.

It's to spend smarter.

The best value engineering exercises don't reduce quality—they improve efficiency, reduce waste, simplify construction, and maximise value for every pound or dollar invested.

Choosing the lowest price can sometimes become the most expensive decision on a project.

With construction insolvencies continuing to affect the industry, price should never be the only factor when selecting a contractor.

A significantly lower tender may indicate:

• Unrealistic labour allowances
• Underestimated material quantities
• Cashflow pressures
• Scope omissions
• Unsustainable margins

While every project is different, it's important to understand why one price is substantially lower than the others before making a decision.

A well-prepared tender should demonstrate:

Following two consecutive years of strong growth, this expansion marks an exciting milestone in the continued development of our business.

What began as a small quantity surveying and estimating practice has grown steadily through the support of our clients, industry partners, and the wider construction community.

Over the past few years, we have worked alongside contractors, subcontractors, developers, designers, and project owners across a broad range of sectors, helping provide greater cost certainty and commercial clarity throughout the project lifecycle.

As part of our next stage of growth, we will be extending our quantity surveying and construction estimating services to small and medium sized construction businesses throughout the UK.

We are pleased to share that Tate Smith, Director of Tate & Sons, has been appointed to provide expert quantity surveying evidence in a matter before the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT).

The role of an expert witness is often misunderstood.

It is not to advocate for one party.

It is not to help someone "win" a dispute.

The responsibility of an expert witness is to assist the Tribunal by providing an independent, objective, and unbiased professional opinion based on the available facts and evidence.

In construction disputes, the difference between opinion and evidence is critical.

Whether assessing variations, claims, project costs, contractual entitlements, or quantum, the focus must always remain on the facts, the documentation, and the professional standards that underpin the assessment.

Most strata owners don’t think about their building’s long term maintenance until something goes wrong.

But new NSW strata reforms are shifting that mindset.

From April 2026, owners corporations will need to adopt a more structured and standardised 10 Year Capital Works Fund Plan formerly known as the sinking fund.

The goal is simple:
better planning, better maintained buildings, and fewer unexpected special levies.

What does this mean in practice?

• More detailed forecasting for major repairs and upgrades
• Greater transparency around future building costs
• Increased focus on sustainability and asset longevity
• More accountability in how strata schemes plan financially
