Print Tip of the Month: designing it yourself? A quick word on colour 🎨

If you're putting your artwork together in Canva or Vistaprint, set it up in CMYK rather than RGB. RGB is designed for screens, while CMYK is what printers use, and the two don't always match perfectly.

I can convert RGB files to CMYK for you, but colours can shift a little in that process, so what looks vivid on your monitor might come out different once it's printed. Setting your file up in CMYK from the start is the easiest way to make sure what you see is what you get.

I know, it feels early to be talking about Christmas. But if there's custom or branded print on your list this year, October is the time to get it organised.

Most suppliers need three to four weeks for custom work. Bespoke items, colour-matched branding, and bulk orders all need that lead time, and once we roll into late November, the good production slots fill up fast.

Planning now means you get the finish you actually want, not just whatever is still available.

"Print Broker" can sound a bit abstract until you see what it actually means day to day. 🖨️

When a job comes in, I don't just place an order. I work out what it really needs, stock weight, finish, run size, turnaround, then match it to the supplier I trust most for that job.

A short run of presentation folders might go to a completely different printer than a bulk business card order, simply because that's where the quality and value line up for the specifications of the job.

I check every sample or proof against the brief myself, and nothing goes to print until I'm genuinely happy with it. That's the real value of a broker over a single shop. I'm not limited to what one supplier can do, so I can always find the right fit for you.

Pretty much anywhere flat, thin and malleable enough to hold the detail. Think business cards, wedding and birthday invitations, personal or business stationery, thank you cards, promotional material, custom packaging, envelopes and labels.

Each one changes how your print looks and feels, not just how it shines.

- Gloss - punchy colours, great for photography, brochures and flyers
- Matte - smooth and low glare, a popular pick for business cards and corporate stationery
- Uncoated - natural, tactile feel with no shine, ideal for letterheads or anything personal

There's no universal best, just the right finish for the job and your brand. Worth working out before you print, not after.

Presentation folders are one of the easiest wins when it comes to refreshing your collateral. They're the first thing a new client holds when you hand over a proposal, and tired ones undercut even the best pitch. 📁

I usually recommend a 350gsm silk stock for these, heavy enough to feel substantial without being stiff to fold, finished with a soft-touch laminate that makes a genuinely good first impression.

Business card slots and a spine pocket for loose documents are simple additions that make a real difference to how usable they are day-to-day.
