One thing I constantly see in the home organisation industry is the recommendation to buy more storage containers, more baskets, more tubs, and more products to contain more stuff.

Maybe it's an unpopular opinion, but it just doesn't make sense to me.

As a minimalist myself, I believe the real flex is owning less and creating simple, easy-to-maintain systems that work for your everyday life.

Don't get me wrong — I can absolutely appreciate a beautifully organised pantry filled with matching containers and personalised labels. They look stunning.

But let's be honest. Decanting every sauce, herb, spice, cereal, and snack into matching containers creates more work. More upkeep. More tidying. More refilling. More cleaning.

For many of the busy families I've worked with, these picture-perfect systems simply aren't sustainable long term.

The average family is already juggling work, school, sport, appointments, and everything else life throws at them. Adding complicated organising systems often creates another task to maintain rather than making life easier.

I think we've been sold the idea that organisation means buying more products.

But organisation isn't about finding a container for everything you own.

It's about owning the right amount in the first place.

When you reduce the excess, cupboards stop overflowing. Drawers become functional. Benches stay clearer. You can find what you need without digging through layers of things you forgot you had.

There is definitely a place for storage products, and they can be incredibly useful when used intentionally. But they shouldn't be the starting point.

The starting point should always be asking: Do I actually need this?

Because the less you own, the less you have to organise, clean, maintain, and manage.

And in my experience, that's what creates lasting change.

A home should be where you feel safe, relaxed, and able to make happy memories — not a space that leaves you feeling stressed or anxious. 😫

I see it all the time in homes — too much stuff, duplicates, old household items that don’t get used anymore but are still kept “just in case.” It’s easy for things to slowly build up, especially when new items keep coming in without regular decluttering.

But over time, that buildup turns into clutter — and eventually a home that feels chaotic instead of calm.

It isn’t about having more stuff, and a full home doesn’t always equal a happy home. Less is always best when it comes to keeping your home well maintained, clean, and tidy. ✨️🪴
