Top tips for successful software vendor selection
How many software vendors exist today? Taking a guess, you are talking about 100,000 plus worldwide, with over 2,000 in Australia alone. That is a lot of options.
So how do you navigate through the right software solution for you? There are many challenges in finding the right one and to be able to take the emotion out of the research and buying process is a challenge. Remember, people buy from people!
The challenges you will face vary. Do you have the right software to meet your needs? Does it deliver against your project objectives? Is it fairly priced? What is the long-term support? So many questions to go through and these are just a few. This can be very overwhelming.
Remember, that when you usually engage with a software vendor you are engaging with the sales team. This means they will highlight their strengths and not always provide you with a clear and full picture.
To help you we have pulled together some top tips to consider:
1. Have a clear agenda, brief and business case.
Make sure you are clear on what you are trying to achieve and some clear KPIs and then stick to these. It is easy to get distracted from what you are trying to achieve and then select the wrong vendor.
2. Have a budget.
It is easy to find a vendor that supplies the right software but is it at the right price with no hidden costs. No-one wants to go over budget, but at the same time you don’t want to go for the cheapest option, it is usually cheap for a reason.
3. Do your research and research and research even more!
This takes time, speak to other similar organisations, find out what is available and research on experience and feedback. With many options available you need to have a clear summary of what is right and fits with your business case and budget.
4. Check the level of implementation support and ongoing support.
Once the software vendor is appointed, how will it be implemented? What support will you get ongoing, and any fees related to this. Your software vendor should not be set and forget, it will need to be an ongoing relationship to ensure it has longevity.
5. How are software updates and bug fixes managed.
An important conversation to have to ensure that you know the process, understand any fees and implications to your organisations for updates and error fixing. Also important to understand how it will impact your teams and customers.
There are other ways to tackle this of course. The tips above will help you get started, but enlisting expertise and someone who is independent outside of your organisation will be far more cost effective and provide an un-bias view and plan.
We will work as part of your business to manage the journey internally and with the vendor step by step.
