New blog post 💃🕺

Ever wonder where I get my information from? Aside from my amazing powers of synthesis 😎, one source I consult is relevant psychological, neurological and biological research. That sounds fancy. I'm not a research scientist, so I also rely on expert interpretations by Elaine Aron (the pioneering researcher for the Highly Sensitive/Responsive temperament) and sometimes others. This helps me place what I read in context and understand it (since research papers can be hard to interpret).

In this post, I've shared examples of these sources, plus tips for how to find more, so you can also go directly to them, if you'd like. I'm really not just making it up! 🤓

I hope you find these useful, for your own evidence needs and/or to present to organisational leaders as evidence that supports the services I offer.

Here's a preview of some of the insights I've shared in my blog post about supporting at school. 🏫

Behaviours/results you might see in 👨‍🎓 HS children 👩‍🎓 who are over-stimulated or overwhelmed:

 Resistance to change
 Lack of social engagement
 Not completing work
 Reluctance to participate in class discussions or answer a teacher’s direct questions, or questions asked them in private
 Low grades, when their potential is obviously higher
 Some children might ‘act out’, while others will withdraw (this might depend upon personality and home environment/learnt behaviours)

Are you seeing these behaviours/results in students in your classes, or your own children? Did you know they could be a result of their temperament, mixed with over-stimulation and unhelpful conditions?

For ideas about what to do, and to learn a bit about why this happens, see my blog post, 'Supporting Highly Sensitive Children at School' - link in comments 👇

'Highly Sensitive – Responsive – children respond more intensely to all the input they receive – positive and negative. This doesn’t mean that teachers or school leaders need to always be on alert and making sure the student is only receiving positive input from their environment. That’s impossible and unneccessary. Highly Sensitive children can be very resilient and are naturally self-regulating. What they need from others – those who have some level of power over their environment – is the conditions which allow them to do this. They will take care of the rest themselves.'

~ From my recent blog post, 'Supporting Highly Sensitive children at school'.

I've shared some of the needs, possible behaviours (in response to unhelpful conditions), and solutions for teachers and school leaders.

I'm also working on an expanded version of this, which I'll offer as a guide once it's complete.

Do you have Highly Sensitive children in your classroom, or school? Is your child Highly Sensitive and experiences over-stimulation and other negative effects from their school environment?

Would you like to know who is Highly Sensitive in your team at work? Here are some things to look for.

Getting an idea of who in your workplace is Highly Sensitive will help you see the benefits of making adjustments so they can thrive there. Consider what they already contribute and do well. Then imagine if that was increased by providing an environment where they are actually at their *best*. What difference could that make?

👧👦Highly Sensitive Children 🏫🚸

Highly Sensitive (Responsive) children are, like their adult counterparts, needed and valuable participants in society - in their families, friendship groups, and schools.

But, also like their adult counterparts, their temperament isn't widely understood. In fact, it's often MISunderstood, and this can be actually very harmful to a highly sensitive child.

How? For one, they can be diagnosed with a disorder they don't have - such as ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder, or depression (although this can certainly be a component for the older child, if their circumstances lead to it). Whole treatments might be administered, beliefs created, and stigma attached. This is really difficult to detach from when the truth is finally revealed - that there's no problem, just a different temperament.

There are other harmful consequences to misunderstanding children with High Sensitivity, and positive gains from understanding them - I'll be writing about it soon on the Sensitive Thrive blog. For now, here's a helpful article from Maureen at The Highly Sensitive Child website:

🎁Gifts of Sensitivity (Responsiveness)

2. Increased insight/perceptiveness 🧐

- how things come together to make sense
- emotional states of other people, and what those might lead to
- what has led to current situations
- how to resolve the problems in those situations
- how to avoid potential problems
- how to get desired results

🕵️‍♂️ Another very useful gift! How would having more people who do this help in your workplace/organisation/classroom?

What if the Responsive people already in your workplace/organisation/classroom were thriving and able to do this to their full ability? 🤔🤯

🎁Gifts of Sensitivity

1. Greater Awareness 👓
- of what’s going on around them
- what might happen soon
- how things are interacting and are likely to interact to produce results

What a gift! How would this help in your workplace?

What is different about people with a Responsive/HS temperament?
1. Their nervous system takes in and responds to more information – particularly being aware of subtleties - than those with non-Sensitive temperaments.
2. Their nervous system then processes this information more deeply than in those with non-Sensitive temperaments.

Result: Highly Sensitive people are ** more responsive ** - to the good and the bad. They THRIVE more and LANGUISH more.

Make improvements - get more back from Highly Sensitive people than non-Sensitive people. Fail to make improvements - Highly Sensitive people are more adversely affected than the non-Sensitive.
