Batchfire Stepping Up To Help The Community

Batchfire had a request from Queensland Fire Department earlier this week asking if we were able to assist them by supplying water to refill their appliances for a Truck / Vegetation fire. The fire occurred on the highway near our Boundary Hill mine overpass.
Of course we answered their request and sent one of our 80000L water carts to assist and keep the water flowing

We sit down for a chat with Lacey Davis, a standout Batchfire production trainee, to chat about how she’s enjoying her training aboard the incredible array of machinery at Callide Mine so far.

"My parents and a lot of my family have worked in mining and they encouraged me, but I also knew it was a really great opportunity," Lacey tells us.

"The positive feedback that I get from not only the supervisors, but the crew members too, is definitely my favourite thing. I’m really glad that I ended up on this crew, because people aren’t afraid to uplift each other which I think is good; I want to give them a big group hug!"

We sit down with Senior Surveyor at Batchfire Resources, Tim Bongers, to talk about his incredible 40-year career in the mining industry.

“I’m mainly office bound now, which probably suits me as I get older, but I have always liked the field work a bit more than the office work,” Tim says.

"I have got a close team and we get along really well. I enjoy the camaraderie when I come to work, it’s a good culture and the people are great – I’ve got so many friends across different departments.”

Callide Mine celebrated 80 years of operation last year, from its humble beginnings in 1944 to now, as one of Queensland’s safest, most efficient energy operations.

To mark the occasion, we dug through the archives to find photos of the mine throughout the ages. From a small hand-dug operation, to a single Cat D7 tractor and ripper, and of course the two draglines – the mine has evolved considerably across the decades.

Did you know, we're currently on the lookout for Dragline Operators? Well, let's get up and close and personal with the biggest piece of equipment on-site at Callide Mine…in fact it’s one of the largest mine machines in the Southern Hemisphere!

Back in 1993 the mighty Marion 8750 was unveiled to the public and at the time it was the largest dragline in the Southern Hemisphere, with a state-of-the-art all-electric layout and massive productivity potential.

For the past 31 years, the Marion has swung day and night, shifting up to 100 cubic metres with each bucket load, equating to around 20 million cubic metres every year! That’s a serious amount of dirt.

Batchfire Resources, in conjunction with Apprentices and Trainees Queensland (ATQLD), has welcomed eight new apprentices and a trainee this year – putting the eager new starters to work at Callide Mine.

Our apprentice and trainee intakes evolve in line with Callide Mine, which in 2024 achieved an incredible 10-million-ROM-tonne coal mined result.

This means sustainable jobs for the Callide region, as a proud employer of choice for trade careers in the resources sector, already supporting around 1,250 local families and enabling work-life balance for our workforce.
